I had both at the same time. The EVH sounds harsher and more compressed. The XTC is bigger, wider, deeper more 3D, oozes quality and a better feel.

I agree, the Bogner is the better amp but it's not night and day. Had an early 101b for a bit and currently am borrowing the 5150 III (100w). I've had it for over a month and have really gotten to know it. The EVH is an instant gratification tone for me. Right off the bat it just sounds cool and is fun to play. The difference becomes apparent the longer you play though.

The EVH is no slouch. Good clean, great crunch on the blue channel and the red has tons of gain on tap. I like that red seems like a continuation of the blue ch, only with more gain and compression. Too many channel switchers are tough to use live because the channels don't "jell".

My only complaint is that it can be difficult to get the top end to open up the way I like without it becoming too gritty or ratty as others said. Gets a little fatiguing the longer I play. I'm being critical though..it's a great amp and can hang with the big boys. Only other thing I can say is it is sensitive to speaker choice. Seems to only have one real sound and the EQ serves to fine-tune that tone. The speakers you choose will either work with that or not.
Cool man....I know you had both and your description was sorta where I was leaning hoping to hear. Everyone likes things for their own reasons. I play rock and metal and honestly dont think I would know unless having both to play for several months. But in the video clip....to me the overall tone sounded damn close.
But I do have 25% hearing loss in my right ear. ;)

A 2204 will sound ratty as well if you keep the MV low.. how many preamp tubes do these amps have? 4? 5? They will sound ratty at lower volumes. I think the mojo starts to roll in around 3 or so on the master volume. Not that fair to judge those amps on low volume playing unless you want a whisper quiet amp. Also camera volume, placement etc...

5150 III has 8 preamp tubes I think... :)

lol 7 preamp tubes?? Good god, what is this world coming too. How much gain do people need?

I agree, that is the exact reason why I sold my 5153, the longer I owned it the more it grated my ears.

I've had both and between the two would keep the EVH and save hundreds....plus I like ratty, not the currently in vogue dark voiced circuits.

Having recent experience with both of those amps in the same room(s) - and specific A/B testing through same cab at one point - I can say that video makes them seem closer in tone than they really are. The 5153 has a little more punch and is quite a lot brighter, where the XTC has a very dark voicing. Both are damn good amps though.

I have no history with either amp. But am I crazy thinking that they sound the same?
Little tone deaf....but man...they sound very close.

Mailman, my big friend.

We both have a similar issue. I´m deaf over 8 kHz and you
are deaf over 6 kHz

It´s possible to compensate hear loss through your head
bones.

Btw, great playing

What's a Groomed Noodler?

Not sure but it's a stupid name for a forum. The only thing I can think of that is that its for guys who have to cut their hair and noodle in their basement.

When Pete Thorn got booted from HRI, the forum owner called him a Groomed Noodler and referred to John Suhr as a Gear Pimp.

Then Pete wrote a song as an FU to HRI called Groomed Noodler.

To further support Pete and to give him and other a new place to hang, I created http://www.groomednoodlers.com/forum

Oh..... wow it's more stupid than I thought.

Was "gear pimp" supposed to be a good or bad thing to call John Suhr?

The amps sound quite noticeably different to me but I'm also pretty familiar with them.

^That shit was.

Alex, John, Pete and Joe(Barzini) were like some of the best guys on there I thought.

.

Gear Pimp? I sorta like the name of that....... :D

"Sup Playa!!! How my Gear Pimp hanging!"
