it actually probably isn't the amps that make me hate the tones, its more the tuned down guitars .... I can't stand the sound of anything lower the Eb (unless its carcass or type o negative)

Yeah it's not really my favorite style either (although I'm good with D or drop C), but you gotta take what you can get with youtube comparisons...

I have always wondered how "heavy" equates to drop tuning and why so many guitar players want to play bass? To me, the 1 finger chug tuned to Z flat with all your mids sucked out, gain and bass dimed doesn't translate to heavy.

The VH4 power section is fantastic. It brings things to the table few amps bring in addition to it tracking well and being a wonderful foundation for effects. Additionally, it is one of the best amps out there for running a stereo rig. I don't recall it not playing nice with another amp for blended tones.

It really is a cool experience to play an SLO where you can open it up by turning it up past 3-6 on the master. Bring your favorite boost pedal, guitar and hopefully there's a speaker cab with decent speakers at your favorite store if they have one...I know they're hard to find used. But there aren't many amps that sound like that...it really is special. And until you play one for yourself, you just don't know. Buying a cheaper mass produced product is fine...hopefully you get many years out of it. But saying its better than amps that are hand made with mil spec parts is just stupid. You might like the tone better....that's fine.

My SLO was not in the same league as the boogie ..thank god.

I was able to play Bill's purple people eater racked SLO at Jame's ampfest a few years ago.

In all honesty the SLO tone sounds dated. Loud mother fuckers, but they need to be cranked beyond 4 on the master volume to even begin to wake up. I think we were running his on 7 before the goods were given up.

The LP players there were loving it - rock city and had saturation with great touch response. But In all honesty I preferred James' Bogner Uberschall Rev2 or my own 5150 II to it.

They are great, but the tone is not worth the price. For $3k+ I'd prefer to look elsewhere.

Different strokes. I paid 2200 for the last one I had used, I couldn't bring myself to buy a new anything ampwise nowadays..last one was a new (gulp) 5153. SLO Stock straight in its cool....I was like "meh" .....but when I put a little boost in front it turned into the best amp I'd ever played. The power thump and articulation were there before, but didn't dig it as much as I thought. But when I put an eq pedal in front, little mid boost (like it needs more mids) I loved it. My point really here is just the build quality of the SLO, VH4 and many others assures most that their amp will be problem free compared to a cheaper mass produced amp like the 5153. In that sense you can't compare amps. I do hope people have NO problems with their 5153s. But it seemed like the last few pages of that 5153 thread was dedicated to problems guys are having. So if you count reliability as a factor the 5153 is left behind. Its like my Toyota Sequoia...2002 with 210K. Clean, runs great....I'll get another 100K out of it. My neighbor is on his 3rd Kia in 4 years....every one started to have problems at 40K he tells me. But yet he keeps buying them lol....he digs them I guess.
