Fattening a Marshall JMP-1 Preamp

I had a Marshall EL34 100/100 with my jmp-1

That sounded immense

Marshall to Marshall power amp for sure is the best match. Doesn't sound as thick with the VHt Fryette, and the 2:90 was too...muddy

I use a ts9 to thicken my marshall...gain @ 0 tone around 11 oclock and level pegged...

Sounds good to my ears

This is my JMP-1 straight into my 9200, no OD or EQ.

What Channels/settings did you use for that? I could never get my JMP-1 to NOT sound like a Solid state pedal, even with my 9100 power amp.

Sounds amazing, wish i could of gotten mine to sound like that. How did you set your power amp in that video?

Gain all the way up, presence at noon, Voice 'B' activated.

You don't mean the 2/90/2 was muddy do you?

Nope. Pretty quiet, actually. Used my Macbook mic for that and it is super sensitive so anything louder than just above bedroom volume clips the shit out of it. The preamp volume (the knob, not the preset volume) can get it down to whisper quiet even when using a 100 watt power amp.

Put the 5150 away and grab a stereo power amp, if you got the funds for it and another cab. The JM-1 into a stereo power amp and two 412's is about as wide as you can get. Into a mono power section, you can probably add all the pedals you want up front and it won't get in wider, just noisier.

What he said...

Passive pups sound thicker than emgs IMO with the JMP-1, always hated actives with the JMP-1

Here is my JMP-1 rig at the height of my JMP-1 madness... It never sounded thin to my ears...

I loved your tone back then but weren't you using EMG's then?

I was using passvies for most of my JMP-1 insanity and the occaisional EMG guitar, then I slowly movedto EMG's over a period of time... By the time I was an full blown EMG poster child I had switched over to the ENGL brand and was using a Powerball and Savage 120 in stereo and I also used the ENGL 570 alot. as well..

In total I used the JMP-1 from 1998 untill about mid 2004 and I used EMG's with it more in that the last year or so of being a JMP-1 worshiper...

I'm sorry but you can't tell how thick a tone is from a thrashy rhythm clip, you need to hear single note lines.

I've gigged a JMP1 since they came out and i'll use it forever if possible.

I highly recommend a tube screamer.
I use the Keeley TS808TB with the drive at 9 o clock, tone at 12 o clock and level at 2 o clock.

The trick with the JMP1 is to use OD1 for the best lead tone.

One great setting is the Dave Murray from Iron Maiden setting if you want maximum drive and thickness
OD1, Drive 20, Volume to taste, tone mid bass and pres all full up, bass shift off.

Doubt you'd need a TS in front of that..
