Favorite Cantrell Tone....

I have always described his tone as "haunted", and I think that is a great term, especially as of late. He's the guy I model both my tone and style after. A lot of that is because he doesn't over play anything, and it just flat out kills!

Facelift is and always has been my favorite. Also, if you don't have the Music Bank box set, GET IT! There are some real gems on there.

When the distorted guitar comes in on Would? during the verse.

pretty much sounds like a Fish pre.

"Know me, broken by my mastuh."

JC's tone led me straight to Friedman and before that to Bogner. Been mooching off Jerry's tone and bi-amping for years!

And now the Bogners are coming back full circle for you!

Agreed. I jam to those CD's all the time. Some of the demo versions of the Dirt tunes have a killer raw/unprocessed tone to them. The Junkhead demo version jumps out at the moment.

Hard to think of Cantrell tone I don't like.....AIC has never been close to constant rotation in my playlist but I'm never upset when I hear a song/Jerry's tone. :D

Not one of the more obvious choices, but "Breaks My Back" and "Jesus Hands" from Boggy Depot have some killer tones as well. Let's face it, Jerry has one of the most recognizable tones (actually several of them) in rock.

Really?

He has great tones, but I never go "Oooh it's JC" when I hear AIC. I never found his tone original.

I am not trying to be a dick but, IMO, if that is your thought then you have not been listening closely. I am open to all opinions to help me shape my own so if you can think of some people that have a more original and well respected tone than Jerry then I would love to hear them. Again, not a flame on you but from my own experiences I speak.

Dude, he defined the tone of hard rock for much of the 90's and what would follow. He was very underrated until the early to mid 2000's when people finally pulled their heads out of their asses and realized that he was and still is something special compared to the other acts of that time period. I'm surprised that any guitarist wouldn't realize the significance of his tone and playing.

FWIW, I remember an issue of Guitar World called the "Dangerous 90's" where the top 20 or 30 guitar albums of the decade were discussed. AIC wasn't mentioned once!!! Hindsight is always 20/20.

I see what you're saying, but IMO, his melodic awareness and note choices are more amazing than his "tone".

That's why he sounds great through Bogners, Peaveys, Mesas, Marshalls, Friedmans, etc.

Their production is always top-notch too, btw.

He's one of my favorite players, but his "tone"(sound of the gear) is fairly conventional to my ears.

His playing and technique are instantly recognizable maybe more than his tone, but his tone is definitely not conventional. At least it wasn't when facelift debuted. That tone was so unique, man nothing sounded like that. It was like a mix of the greasy saturated 80's metal tone, but without the overly processed "cheese" and had a more natural, woody and raw sound. Facelift was a benchmark in guitar tone.

I think his style is instantly recognizable but not necessarily his tone. When they released the first single from the new one i instantly knew it was Jerry Cantrell because of the riff, not the tone.

Facelift FTW. Dirt's tone is carried a bit by excellent songs and arrangements. It's a little fuzzy for me but overall the record sounds so good. I think my favorite two off that are Damn That River and Junkhead.

The reason his newer tones aren't as unique as they were in the Facelift era, is because for one, he has crafted a more modern tone and two, everybody subconsciously ripped off his vibe!  I'm tellin ya, he inspired more guitarists IMO than almost any other player/band of the 90's. Listen to Nickelsack. Complete ripoff of Jerry's sounds/songs/and even vocals from Boggy Depot.

He doesn't get enough credit.

Listen to some of the stuff on Silver Side Up. He is trying so hard to sound like Cantrell.

Here, tell me that Nickelback doesn't sound like a bad rip off of songs like this one: Now just picture Chad Cockrock Kroeger singing em while you listen.

Also, "She Was My Girl" Couldn't find it on Youtube

Everything Dirt, but its all good. Anyone belting out any of Layne's tunes?
