I've experimented over the years with neo speakers for many genres. I really like the Eminence EM12N, Tonkerlites, the Jensen Tornado Classic for overall great tone with light weight, but didn't care for them for hard rock and metal.

I saw an advertisement for the new Jensen Tornado Special and decided to give it a go. I was very pleasantly surprised. I played my Bay area Thrash mod through it and boom! There is the tone and feel I have always looked for in a Neo. Finally! I have spent too much time and money looking for good Neo speakers for hard rock and Metal and was always disappointed.

Welp, not any more....

I will post some pictures and clips tomorrow

The Jensen Tornado Special is the ticket!

What traditional speakers would you compare it to in voicing?

I have a pair of Celestion G12 Neo Century (not Vintage) speakers, brand new in the factory sealed boxes for a project long since abandoned.

I may do two 1x12 cabs with these at some point.

zzzounds still has it up on their site:

Celestion discontinued them which made them hard to find, now they're basically non-existent:

notice the sensitivity!

Nominal diameter: 12 inch, 305mm
Power Rating: 80W
Nominal impedance: 8 or 16 Ohms
Sensitivity: 102dB
Chassis type: Pressed steel
Voice coil diameter: 1.75 inches, 44.5mm
Voice coil material: Round copper
Magnet type: Neo
Frequency range: 80-5000Hz
Resonance frequency, Fs: 85Hz
DC resistance, Re: 7 Ohms & 11.81 Ohms

@Fusionbear you ever try that EM12 neo with your Twin circuit? I've been looking at those for a long time because of the weight reduction. The demos I've heard make it sound pretty good.

Yes, it is a good speaker for a Twin. Two of the those in a twin saves a ton of weight and sounds really good. I actually prefer the Tonkerlites in the Twin as the mids are a little more scooped than the EM12N . But, the EM12N has a little more bass. So it's a bit of a toss up....

But for my 2203/2204, Splawn, or Bay area thrash mod. Neo speakers haven't sounded good imo.

At least until now with the Tornado Special.

You are a fountain of gear knowledge Carl.....

Based on some demos it seemed like the EM12n had less bass than EVM12s' the guy was demoing....so maybe it's the ticket. You make the tonkerlites sound interesting as well. I almost pulled the trigger on the 12 neos but all the reports were from mystery guitarists and many of the neo reviews complain about harshness so I passed. It's good to hear from a guy who I know can actually play guitar with a neo-fury so thanks for all your info sharing bro!!!

I'll keep that one in mind. I love the Neo Creambacks. Sound like a good Greenbackish speaker. Ever try those?

I did, had one in my Splawn Streetrod combo. It had this strident high end frequency I could never dial out. I replaced it with a Scumback M75 and love that speaker in it best.

Scumback M75 is no joke. A great speaker. I've had my Creamback Neos in a Legacy 2x12 combo and now in a 4x12 and they definitely sound best in a larger cab.

Awesome info. Neo speakers usually get a bad rap for high-gain stuff because the top end can feel a bit clinical or scratchy, and the low-end response sometimes lacks that classic ceramic 'thump' and compression when you chunk on an E chord.

How does the low-end tightness hold up under fast palm-muting with that thrash mod?

Very well. This is the first neo that sounds and feels great to me...

I had a little time today and swapped the Scumback M75 with a Tornado Special and I do like it better overall. I am very pleasantly surprised. It has a little more low end thump without feeling stiff. I had the combo cranked for a while and only stopped so I don't drive my neighbors crazy....lol....
