Pretty cool Pete, I have a feeling that I too will have an Axe Fx rig in my future....

they're also $899 each

Yeah. :) Well, I paid $720 for mine new at guitar center, they had a labor day sale on em and I always deal with the same salesguy, he hooked me up for another $50 or so off. :)

I can sell the tube power amp I was going to use (Randall RT 2/50 midi switching) for probably $600ish, and then if I sold one of my Marshall 4x12s it would have paid for one of the QSC's at list price, so it's pretty comparable IMHO.

Oh, forgot to mention how much quieter my rig was too... the axe has a great gate on it, but also the QSC and axe combo had no 'idle' noise like a tube amp does - no hiss, nothing at all. I'm home sick today, may crank the axe/QSC a bit in a few and make some new patches. :)

I'm going to seriously look at a used QSC....I want FOH to sound good too.

The more I read about people using the Axe, the more it seems like alot of them are using those or SS power amps. I was going to go tube but each day my mind shifts the other way.

A few things pushed me personally over... and I even already had a good tube poweramp to run with mine, racked up and ready to go... and a choice of several guitar cabs to use too.

1) If you dial in the axe to sound good with your tube setup and guitar cabs, it's not going to be the best tones IMHO in the PA/front of house. There is a setup tweak in the axe where you can run one set of outputs without speaker and poweramp sims for your guitar rig, and have an output for direct WITH the speaker/poweramp sims... but you're still tweaking for your tube amp/guitar cab.

2) Other thing to do would be to run the axe into the tube/guitar cab rig, and then mic it. However, this destroys a lot of the reason why you are using the axe in the first place... one of my goals is consistent sound wherever I go, and miking a cab, even though I've gotten pretty good at it, changes from day to day. I even started taking an E609 Silver and an SM57 to gigs because sometimes the 57 sounded like crap and sometimes the 609 sounded like crap - usually if one sounded really bad then the other rocked.

3) If I can get a good sound on the QSC, then I *know* it's going to rock in the PA as long as the sound guy doesn't mess with it too much, and the two guys that run sound for the bands I'm in do a great job. They can polish a turd, but can leave a good tone alone too.

4) Using a full range speaker setup allows you to use all the different cab and mike and poweramp emulations. Some sounded ok on top of a guitar cab, but it's like wearing contacts and then putting on eyeglasses. :)

I almost went with a SS power amp and a seperate cab, but it's like my KRK powered monitors at home - I'd rather buy the speakers with the power amp built in/designed around them for a flatter response.

The above is just my opinion and there are guys out there happy with tube rigs and the axe, I just figure might as well take advantage of all the axe stuff.

Oh, and the QSC is 500 watts, and will flap your pants no problem at a gig if you want it to. I had to go into global settings and cut a lot of bass out, I was shaking the stage at our last casino gig.

Pete

I agree with all this.

One of the best parts of the Axe is its flexibility in how it can be run.

Doesn't take the QSC for FOH to sound good...I run a split signal into my mixer between the DI out and the miked speakers and send that to my in ears and FOH...

Could you run a little mixing board in front of the QSC thingy and use it as both Axe power amp and vocal monitor?

One thing I love about the Axe is how flexible it is... but for someone with my attention span, the QSC is easier. Plus I can fit my amplification rig in the back of my Mazdaspeed 3 with the hatch 'lid' on, nobody can see inside. I'm sure Ed's rig sounds killer, but it's a lot more stuff than I would want to deal with for my $100-$125 a night gigs. :)

I had a Axe-Fx and returned it. I dug it but I prefer having the knobs on it like an amp to be dialed I can't stand having to go in move left page up etc? If they take the POD idea of all knobs on front then I am ready.

Hell, to keep you from moving to different pages you'd need about 40 knobs on the thing! I like the lack of knobs, Once I had the global eq set to where I wanted it for my volume level, I didn't touch my amp the rest of the night. I was always tweaking my tube amps here and there, even by the third set!

No your right but I want the basic up front gain, bass, mids etc.

I hear ya, but even then... two amps, and if you had all the stuff that the amp emulation covered and the poweramp stuff which really influences the tone too, you'd still have a scad of knobs on there! :)
