Never had a pair of actives before. Picked some up on a whim what should I expect ?

Well... I have been down the fishman fluence path for a few months now. It’s been a rough one. I have been tracking DI’s and the only bad thing I can say about them is that they can really accentuate that Mario going down a pipe noise, on the pick attack, in certain situations.

I swapped the bridge (fluence modern) out with emg 81’s and noticed that the fishman were wayyyy more dynamic sounding. Much more presence. Much more attack and just aggressive sounding. I ended up putting the Fishman modern back in. The coolest thing is it’s a direct swaps with emgs and takes just a few minutes to swap

I have them in a 2020 Charvel. I avoided active pickups for a long time after using EMGs for about 10 year. The Fluence are pretty good. They remind me of Lace Sensors in that they are relatively low noise, but have a nice consistency across the fret board.

I don't know that I'd seek them out if I was pickup shopping, but I'm in no rush to replace them either.

I had some on two different occasions in a Jackson King V, and a Les Paul Custom. They were fine in the V, but terrible in the Custom. On both guitars I didn’t like how they sounded on Marshall amps so they went out the door. I always felt they were a bit too compressed and the mids a bit too much. Went back to Seymour Duncan distortions in both guitars

I like how they still let your guitar's tone come through; so they might not work in every guitar, just like passives. Put an EMG in a guitar and it sounds like an EMG guitar now, or if it came with EMG's it's an EMG guitar

Now this is true. They did sound significantly different in both guitars. I did like the it in my King V, but it just never jelled with my Marshall JMP. Now in my Mesa!!! That was an amazing tone. They were also really good in a few EC-1000 models.

They came stock in my LTD Susi. I dig them, very clear and tight. In the studio, I stay on the "passive" option and usually no gain boost, but like having the options as I could imagine live it would be good to have when needed

That Grind or Fizz or as you said "they can really accentuate that Mario going down a pipe noise, on the pick attack," that is the part of Active Pickups that i don't like. The EMG 85 Has less of that so i use an 85 in my Jim Root Strat.

When I first read that I thought, "What's he talking about?" Then I followed the link to the spot you mentioned, and now I can't un-hear Mario  .

I want this to be a PSA of sorts.. I’ve emailed fluence about it and they never responded. If you have a set of working ears, how can you just ignore it? Makes tracking a nightmare
