So my main 3 guitars are all Caparison Adam D sigs. IYKYK, these guitars are perfect for me. I have an EMG 81 in #1 and wanted something different for #2.
Enter the Mortal Coil.
I chucked an hour at it earlier today. I like it quite a bit; my main gripe about the Fishmans is that they feel too polite, for lack of a better word. No heat, no sense this could go off the rails. They’re just too different from an 81, and that’s my main active and what I have in #1. Used it for years, know it inside and out.
If you like 81s but want a different flavor of active, this is that. If you like Fishmans but want something gnarlier, this is also that.
The MC setting is a good active tone, solid and thick. It’s a better Fishman. The passive/#2 setting reminds me of a JB, but thicker and more bass heavy if that makes sense.
Overall I’m glad I changed it out, wish I’d have done it weeks ago.
My 2 main guitars come with the KsE Fishman bridge pickups, and if you’ve used Fishmans before you know they typically have 2 settings for 2 tones, one being modern and active and one approximating a more passive pickup type tone. The 81 doesn’t do that, so I’m locked into that tone which is fine.
These use the same wiring harness as the Fishmans, so you get the 2 voicings if that matters to you. Just wanted something different for #2, and this fit the bill. Got it as an open box on Proaudiostar for like $105 or something like that, they’re reg like $150 I think. Worth it to me to try it out for $100.
Keep in mind that this guitar is in drop C as I play metal, I have no idea how much anyone would like this in standard or drop D or anything.
