Am I expecting too much out of an amp here. I want to be able to get early Van Halen tones along with Dokken "Tooth and Nail" / "Under Lock and Key" / "Back for the Attack"and even RATT "Invasion of your Privacy" / "Out of the Cellar" tones. I know its a lot to ask out of one amp. Problem is I dont have one near by for me to check out. Im pretty sure to get that early VH its going to need the DROP B+ feature. Not sure about the OLD/NEW switch. I want the MID BOOST switch and for sure the LOOP MASTER. As for the DOKKEN and RATT tones im looking for maybe the amp is capable already. Opinions please. Cheers guys.

AFAIK 3 amps can deliver that kind of tones quite effectively: Splawn Quickrod, Bray, Ceriatone Chupa.

Not asking too much. As long as you have the guitars and chops, the QR won’t let you down.

And don’t use V30 speakers. Use greenbacks, creambacks, blackbacks, or better yet a Splawn cab with smallblocks.

I’m not a V30 hater, I just played Splawns for a long time and it wasn’t an ideal match with that speaker.

Im no George Lynch but I do love his playing and tone. Here is a humble attempt to say the least. This is a Mesa Triaxis preamp I use to own. Not sure it qualifies as "Under Lock and Key" tone but its ok.

That sounds pretty dang close to me, tone and playing. Killer guitar, too. Those Kamikazes are my favorites. A Quickrod is on my short list of amps I’d really like to own.
Edit...that Traxis sounds like it can get pretty Marshally. Those are killer preamps.

Thank you. The TRIAXIS is one I wish I never let get away. Right now Im using an ENGL Savage 120. Its great for modern metal and can get some classic tones too but I feel the SPLAWN Quickrod would be a great addition to my collection. Pretty sure the quality is top shelf too. Im just anxious to buy sight unseen. Thats why I want your guys opinions first.

I wouldn't be anxious about that purchase man. I can tell you that I had a Competition back around 2006 or so and people on the forum told me that one of my clips "nailed" the early VH brown sound. I forget what speakers but had them in an Avatar cab. I'm thinking they were some type of Greenbacks though.

Especially with the upgrades those amps have like the voltage stuff and mid cuts, I can't imagine how more awesome that amps is. I always say that the Splawns in my opinion do a better early L.A. Strip sound and Friedman does a better late L.A. Strip sound. I only say that because people often want to compare the two. Both are killer but the Splawns have more of that tone that you hear on VH I and II, early Ratt, Dokken, etc. Not trying to stereotype a tone but all of us who like that music know when we hear "that tone".

Built like tanks. No worries about quality unless you buy used and the amp was befuckled by a previous owner.

Thank you for the post. This is what I need to hear. Sounds like a no brainer for me then.

I haven`t used V30s by themselves with my Splawn SS EL34 but the V30 mixed with a Creamback H75 sounds killer in my Splawn 2x12 . I plan on putting those speakers in an X patter in my Splawn 4x12 in the next month or so

I just meant that there are much better and natural matches. I’m sure you cab sounds good.

Good info above.

I’ll just say that I have owned a few QR’s and enjoyed them ALL. My opinion they are the MOST affordable of the “excellent” amps. Many other great ones that also “get” amazing tones...including Bray, Friedman, of which I have both.
Point is, Scott Splawn dominates at the QR price point.

Plus, you don’t need B+ to get any of the tones you mentioned, yet it’s also nice to have. If you want versatility from your QR, simply get a loaded QR. Still the best in that price point, IMO.
With the 4 button foot switch, you have access to 2 gears and 2 OD’s, as well as clean. Seriously well done. Makes the most of space and makes the amp much more useable for a wider variety of tones without changing EQ or Gain settings on the amp itself.
Last thing, I have also used a midi controller with these amps and the foot switch jacks can be used to get all the switching of the footswitch. Again, nicely versatile.

Anyway, I bought my first QR without trying it first and have NEVER been disappointed.
Go get one and ROCK it!!!!

Oh, BTW, it takes pedals very well and the loop is great too. Not much downside here.

FWIW, I bought a Competition (single channel QR) without having played a Splawn before about 4-5 months ago. It greatly exceeded my expectations and can easily get all of the sounds mentioned above. It's a great amp, period, and the price just makes it even better. I would highly recommend one.

Man you can't go wrong with a QR for the tones you are looking for.

I appreciate all the replies. It really takes the worry out of the equation. Im close to pulling the trigger on this. I'll keep you posted. Cheers. Michael

i love splawns and have much respect for scott. i always boosted mine...i’ve had 4 of them. 3 QR’s and a competition. great amps. you need a cab that has less air. splawns are damn bass heavy in tone. i got mucho mucho compliments in tone when using it live with a carvin slant. when using with my splawn straight cab, people would tell me they couldn’t hear me. might be something to do with eminence speakers too. as they have more lows. carvin wasn’t loaded with them.

I will second that, I have the first generation Promod (mine has el34's so essentially a QR) and it does early VH tones with ease. The only thing stopping it from being perfect for it is my chops!

Oh hey, the guy that got my Competition years ago!! :) What's going on man. Glad I started a Splawn floodgate. LOL! I can't remember, did you have a Splawn before you bought mine?
