Side by side with Zappa's Bassman amp that's been modded.

That's the often despised, always amusing, Mr. Chucklehead himself playing his version 1,459,352 new software ( it's really 10 but who's counting).

I guess it's a method that analyzes the spastic, non-conforming behavior of real amp circuits and then applies it to the cyber amp. It's suppose to rub some of the polish off the sound and rough it up a bit I gather as well as mimic exactly whatever a real amp does.

I should probably read the patent ( something called MIMIC ((Multipoint Iterative Matching and Impedance Correction)) if it's out there to see what it actually does.

He's leaving the studio polish amp version there in case some of the Fractalites don't like losing their smooth and wanna roll back and forth.

He also bought a Dumble ODS100. Gonna have to rub off some goop to MIMIC that I reckon. ;)

That's the news.

I think the pick attack and percussiveness is cool ,but there is some harshness to the top end and a grainy quality to the gain. I thought his panama clip was better
I am interested in hearing V10 though

Someone bought that Dumble off of TGP for 125k?!

There was some interesting stuff there, but he'd get a lot further with clips if he had someone who could play that style correctly do it. Part of that was like watching Steve Martin dance in The Jerk. (and no, I'm not saying I'm much better either at it).

A lot of that VH stuff is in the hands - some kid posted a youtube vid using a stock kemper profile that I wouldn't have thought would get close at all, but his playing style bridged a lot of gap IMHO. Cliff should have Pete Thorn or Dweezil do a VH clip with this more realer version.

I agree the tone was ok but the playing was just uncomfortable. It hard to judge a tone on that clip IMO ,because you expect the full VH Halen the flanger on aint talking , the Phase 90 on Atomic punk
with out it it just does not sound like the Brown sound

compare to this when he goes into VH 2.30 mins in . again comes down to the player .$250 amp and a great guitar player

The playing on Cliff's part has never really had me interested or excited. But I listen to these clips for the science, not the style. The pick attack, the break up, the clean up, the decay, there's a lot of very cool stuff going on here, and I'd imagine with the obsessive nature of their (FAS) constant refinement and evolution; it'll just get better.

I've let it all go as of late. I'm never going to "compare" playing my fave amps with the A2 or the Kemper or the like - they're two different species altogether. What I am hoping for with the A2 going FRFR is to have an awesome sonic experience - with great tone and lots of flexibility. All this MIMIC stuff is cool in the sense that it's really offering the "feel" and "call and response" of an amp. Keep it up, I'll just keep playing :D

I was a huge fan of the Axe... but after letting it go for almost 6 months now, it's fucking HILARIOUS to pop over to the Fractal forums and watch everyone drool over this shit... people that SWORE when the Axe II first came out it just COULDN"T get better... immediately scoff at their current firmware when a new one is announced, and suddenly their current presets are total shit... it's borderline insanity in my honest opinion...

....totally fucking entertaining though...

...sorry to derail, that had nothing to do with this thread.... clip was actually ok... but nothing to write home about....

Bottom line to all of it does it make you want to play. Not to derail the thread, what are you going with for FRFRs?

--The true fun begins now that they have had to edit presets from the front panel ,with no AxeEdit. Read some of those threads. Take away the computer editors and they cannot continue

I saw many vids of Rockstah jammin some EVH on any old amp, even a Solid state Marshall once. They sounded great. Unless someone is really a great player, once you get the baseline decent gear, lessons from a good pro pay off more than gear IMO.

the gear fanboi insanity is funny.

The most revealing thing on tone for me is when we tape things at guitar lessons I take. Same amp used. Now I know I don't play like a session guy, but to hear how technique changes tone is amazing.

He does a take for ref and I play it and record it as well. There is a tone difference in one finger bridging 2 strings vs 2 fingers nailing them with slight vibrato. It all matters way more than phantom aliasing and all this other crap.

I personally thought it didn't sound very good...
I agree. Most of the clips I hear from the AxeFX these days sounds more like modeler than it did before. Sounded best a few versions after the release of the II. Since then? It's gotten worse.

I wouldn't even call it borderline. They are an interesting lot, for sure.

That is funny.Today's gold is tomorrow's crap in their eyes and ears. But you know, the tone just keeps gettin realer and realer.

What's interesting is the different responses from forum to forum.

The Axe has always done high gain pretty good, but my ear isn't as critical of high gain tones, though. That SRV clip sounds like a well dialed in modeler to me. Not a tone to be ashamed of, but still sounds like a modeler. Definitely one of the better modeler clips, I would say. Go listen to the original and you'll hear the difference. Dude can play though. Don't get me wrong, a perfectly fine tone for recording in the middle of the night without bothering anyone and perfectly adequate for 99.999% of people.

That modded Bassman sounds awful. Both of them.

Not a fan of the bassman tone myself. Just showing the similarities between the two. Pretty close as is the Silent Underground thing.

I'm just posting some news here not trying to convince anybody. If someone doesn't like something you can't make them like it. Took me a few years to figure that out. :)
