Freidman, Cameron, and modded amps are ridiculously priced!

True Confessions of a gear whore... or "Here comes the flames"...

Once upon a time boys I bought a this mack daddy 1979 Friedman modded Marshall JMP 100 watt right here off the rig talk forum...

It had everything a typical "Sand in the vagina, knob polishing, rig-talk fan-boi amp mod junkie" could ever want... EEEEEEEEKKK !!!

It had the "Corn-Hole Mod", the "Hairy-Corn Hole Mod, a couple of toggles that went "flippy-flip" and some other shit too that I cant' remember...

Anyway after giving it a few days I felt it sounded just average to me at best and IMO a stock 2203 and a decent pedal or two would have done the trick and then some.

I honesty felt it had nothing on my brand new JVM 210 (which I had just bought prior to this amp for $1165.00 NIB) on the orange/amber mode with a nice boost in front of it and I dumped it after two weeks to a another guy who literally flipped it sold it 2-3 days later again on this very rig-talk forum.

Guess it wasn't his thang either... Anyway I still have the JVM-210H two years or so later...

Did I mention I paid $230,000,000,000, million gagillion, bazillion dollars for it...???

I honesty felt it had nothing on my brand new JVM 210 (which I had just bought prior to this amp for $1165.00 NIB) on the orange/amber mode with a nice boost in front of it and I dumped it after two weeks to a another guy who literally flipped it sold it 2-3 days later again on this very rig-talk forum.

Guess it wasn't his thang either... Anyway I still have the JVM-210H two years or so later...

Did I mention I paid $230,000,000,000, million gagillion, bazillion dollars for it...???

I also think they are overpriced. Its supply and demand as most know.

I also think many amps are over priced. $4k for a Diezel, $3k for a Bogner.

That doesn't mean that statement is meant to bash them. I think they are some of the best amps ever made and only say they are over priced because I want them badly and can not afford them wisely.

Here is what you don't seem to understand based on what you wrote. Whether you (or I, or any individual), personally, would or could buy something is irrelevant to the discussion of whether something is overpriced.

If the manufacturer is selling enough product and making a profit, their product is NOT overpriced.

I mean… you talk about supply and demand and then contradict it later by saying that something is overpriced because you can't afford it. All that means is that the product is priced too high for YOU to afford, not that it is overpriced for the intended market (which may not be you). Overpriced would mean there are not enough people willing to pay for something to make it viable for the manufacturer. In other words, there is no market for that thing, at that price...

You probably can't afford a Ferrari either, right? But they are selling the number of cars they need to to make a tidy profit. I'd say therefore that they are NOT overpriced. It's quite a distinction and people keep confusing "overpriced" with "I can't afford it or would never spend that much for it". Two different things...

Exactly. The other thing is the depreciation argument. Having money tied up in a Ferrari, or high end gear isn't losing money. Depreciation is losing money, and Ferraris and some boutique gear depreciate Much slower than others.

A well built , great sounding amp is sometimes worth the investment. I can remember years ago when Marshall first released the tsl 100. I purchased the 2x12 version I think it was $1700 plus tax. The amp nickel and dimed me. First problems with footswitch, had to replace it twice at over $100 a pop. Then the output transformer went. Then intermittent problems with the switching and reverb. It was a constant headache and was in and out of the shop all the time. Now I realize that paying 3k for a well built amp that can last for decades isn't a bad deal.

I have an unfair advantage in that I can take a used $500 Marshall DSL and make it sound like a boutique amp, so spending thousands on a Friedman or Cameron isn't in my thought process.

Anyone who can plug in an SD-1 or an OD808 in front of it can do it, too. Though I'd really love to know what I'm doing with tinkering with amps. I have enough trouble wiring guitars with super switches, though.

Dude, I've been saying for a while now that a "good" stock JCM800 with a decent boost pedal hangs with ANY modded Marshall. The only problem with stock Marshalls is the volume.

Me and my friend were going through Bogners, Diezels, Camerons, etc. He bought a JCM800 from Nick, dawnofdream, and that JCM800 with a boost was as good as any of them.


Any you know, I wouldn't mind testing a Splawn out again since they have that loop volume trick. That doesn't kill the tone does it?

I'll always have a Mesa for those sounds, but I think I need something Marshally.
