Freidman, Cameron, and modded amps are ridiculously priced!

What is probably even more sad, is the fact that as men, we are expected to spend anywhere from 2-10k on a little thing called an engagement ring.... imagine those things didn't have to be purchased? Those of you who are married could already have that Friedman or Bogner! If you are divorced, that becomes even more clear....

I want to get my guitar refinished and get a new road bike.

Even with a jewelers discount through connections, I'm still looking at 3,000 out of pocket.

Rupe called it big time. Who gives a shit how much you make. It's all relative.

You want to know whats overpriced??
Starbucks coffee!!
I wouldnt pay .10 cents for a cup of it! (But I am not a coffee drinker) ;)

But there are plenty that will pay the over inflated price. Why? Its sells.
The 'overpriced amps'.....also sell.

See, that's why I knew I made the right choice. She chose something that was $750 or so, as we had a budget (i.e.. how much I could get approved for on financing) and was a happy camper. I would never marry someone who would put us in such debt unnecessarily and impact our ability to do the real things in life together. Like me buying more amps than I need and a nice LP standard

She's not materialistic in the slightest. I want to get her something killer because I'm always buying gear, bikes etc for me.

I also think they are overpriced. Its supply and demand as most know.

I also think many amps are over priced. $4k for a Diezel, $3k for a Bogner.

That doesn't mean that statement is meant to bash them. I think they are some of the best amps ever made and only say they are over priced because I want them badly and can not afford them :D wisely.
Here is what you don't seem to understand based on what you wrote. Whether you (or I, or any individual), personally, would or could buy something is irrelevant to the discussion of whether something is overpriced.

If the manufacturer is selling enough product and making a profit, their product is NOT overpriced.

I mean… you talk about supply and demand and then contradict it later by saying that something is overpriced because you can't afford it. All that means is that the product is priced too high for YOU to afford, not that it is overpriced for the intended market (which may not be you). Overpriced would mean there are not enough people willing to pay for something to make it viable for the manufacturer. In other words, there is no market for that thing, at that price...

You probably can't afford a Ferrari either, right? But they are selling the number of cars they need to to make a tidy profit. I'd say therefore that they are NOT overpriced. It's quite a distinction and people keep confusing "overpriced" with "I can't afford it or would never spend that much for it". Two different things...

Starbucks over roasted, burnt flavor coffee, I can't drink it.

Lots of people like it and are willing to pay the premium.
That coffee and Gibson LP's, for me, not worth the premium.
I can at least appreciate a gibby LP even if it doesn't fit my hands, but I can't even appreciate that mess SB calls "coffee".

Talk about 'mark up'.
I worked in a pawn shop way back when I finished college, when BIG hair was still in style. :)
I saw and learned what gold, and diamond jewelry are really worth on the actual metal and gem market.
A lot less than what retail asks, obviously, but I mean a LOT less.

Granted, some pieces are truly art as there is a lot of work involved, so for those it goes beyond the wholesale price of the materials used.
For the vast majority of engagement and wedding rings the retail prices are way over what the materials are actually worth.
That's why I always recommend that couples shop at pawn shops.
You will get more for your money easily. You can have a better quality diamond. and a larger size. AND spend a good amount less.

But, I typically get this from the ladies, "I don't want a USED diamond ring."
What they don't know is that there is no such thing as a "used diamond", really.
You can buy the ring or set, then take it to a jeweler who can refresh and size the rings and they look brand spanking new when done, and you save A LOT of money, often 1/4 of what it would cost at new retail.

Many new rings are made with diamonds that have been resold-reused in the wholesale market from places such as pawn shops.
On the items that don't sell we would remove the diamond or other gems and sell those to a wholesaler, and same with the gold.
You can buy a nice quality diamond at a pawn shop and then have a custom ring made and still be way ahead, and you'll have something more special.

BTW, diamond "chips" that they put on rings are there so they can push up the carat weight/size and the price along with it.
Any diamond smaller than 1/10 of a carat is worth nothing. When we valued diamonds we only counted anything above 1/10 of a carat by measurement. Buy larger single stones, not a lot of chips.

I digress.
And by doing the above you will have more to spend on something of real value, yes, those over-priced customized amps!

Umh actually that is a very good respectable income that is wayyyy over the national average in the US. Not sure what you are making in Canada but the original poster is doing more than ok.

I have no wife, kids, mortgage, and two vehicles paid for. I rent a condo.

They wouldn't command those kind of prices if nobody was buying. I got no problem with it.

I'm just glad the amp that hits my ear just right cost significantly less (Mesa Mark III) ;)

Call it a generation gap, but I'm grateful I grew up in an era where people did not feel compelled to publicly post every detail of their mundane life, let alone inane random opinions.

Great info! ..but i can only imagine the face I'll get when I mention that we are going to pawn shops to look at gear....and engagement rings :bleh: . That said, there is nothing stopping anyone from ring shopping, seeing what she likes, then going to a pawn shop to find comparable rocks and having them refitted into a brand new ring. Hypothetically speaking of course!

I'm glad I did it. Would do it again.

True Confessions of a gear whore... or "Here comes the flames"...

Once upon a time boys I bought a this mack daddy 1979 Friedman modded Marshall JMP 100 watt right here off the rig talk forum...

It had everything a typical "Sand in the vagina, knob polishing, rig-talk fan-boi amp mod junkie" could ever want... EEEEEEEEKKK !!!

It had the "Corn-Hole Mod", the "Hairy-Corn Hole Mod, a couple of toggles that went "flippy-flip" and some other shit too that I cant' remember...

Anyway after giving it a few days I felt it sounded just average to me at best and IMO a stock 2203 and a decent pedal or two would have done the trick and then some.

I honesty felt it had nothing on my brand new JVM 210 (which I had just bought prior to this amp for $1165.00 NIB) on the orange/amber mode with a nice boost in front of it and I dumped it after two weeks to a another guy who literally flipped it sold it 2-3 days later again on this very rig-talk forum.

Guess it wasn't his thang either... Anyway I still have the JVM-210H two years or so later...

Did I mention I paid $230,000,000,000, million gagillion, bazillion dollars for it...???
