Gear revelations: Had any lately?

turn amp gain and eq controls up more than usally then tighten/limit it with a boost pedal and really good eq pedal,so the amp is pushin maximum like it was made...its like pushin a race car hard with a restrictor plate

1. I don't care for ceramic pickups for getting awesome, smooth lead tones. Alnico all the way.

Ceramic pickups kick ass! Don't blame the pickups if you don't know how to use them.

2. Thin strings don't sound as good as thick strings. End of story.

I was ignorant to believe this in the past too, but different situations require different strings.

3. 25w G12Ms sound great at low volumes, but with the amps I have, break up too much at higher volumes to sound amazing.

Depends on how many 25w G12Ms you have connected.

4. Mesa V30s are much, much better than regular V30s.

What are you basing this statement on?

5. Uberschall with Uberkab is incredible.

I guess. I much prefer cabs with no insulation now.

6. Low action doesn't equal the best tone.

One thing you & I agree on.

7. Low pass filters are necessary for distorted rhythm guitars on recordings.

Can be used effectively, but not necessary at all.

I recently discovered the greatness of the Duncan Distortion in a Les Paul and also the benefits of lining cabs with acoustical foam.

Cabs with acoustical foam work wonders in live situations, not the greatest for recording.

The name on the headstock or the name on the faceplate mean almost nothing, all else being equal, except at Rig-Talk, where your character will be judged based on whether you own the "right" or the "wrong" gear.

Yes...I don't need all the shit that I currently have. That's why I'm selling most of it.

liked the tone on creepy anger, you must like tool

Thanks, that was Mr Herberto.

Tool is ok, but I prefer their older stuff.

Probably true, but not with my rig or my fingers.

Again, my rig / fingers / ears are calling for thick strings. Guess I should have put in a disclaimer that these thoughts apply to me and YMMV.

Very true! I ran a 4x12 which just wasn't enough.

4. Mesa V30s are much, much better than regular V30s.

Past experience. I've worked with V30s for years, and the Mesa ones - currently loaded in my Bogner cab - smoke the others.

I guess. I much prefer cabs with no insulation now.

Valid. Most tracks that I've listened to without the low pass filters, though, haven't been as appealing to me as those that have them. I find I really hate that extreme high end fizz.

I had a revalation and its that I only need a single channel amp and my axe plugged straight in, no pedals ....

High mids are my friend.
I need 202907589 OD pedals.
JJ tubes stink.
Lowend is overrated.
Garageband's amp sims sound just as good as a mic'd amp, if you tweak it enough.

Taking a month or two of guitar lessons every year or so helps the most important part of your tone/sound. Learn a mode to get a feeling in your tone, not buy a pedal or think you need a new amp or guitar. Provided you are not playing a total crap setup.

1. I don't like active pickups
2. Recording is a whole different beast than I had ever imagined

Yep.....

1. Rick St. Pierre and Wizard Amps are great.
2. Jerry Pinelli at FJA is an awesome amp tech.
3. I am still not interested in an Axe-FX.
4. I still don't trust Midi boards and Mult-FX.
5. Gibson guitars get worse every year.
6. Mark still hasn't built my CCV after 5 months.
7. I was happy with my Uberschall and VH4. Then I found Rig Talk and it cost me around $30,000.
8. How many Marshall clones do we really need?
9. I am going set my DW kit back up and start playing drums again.
10. Ground loops aren't any easier to get rid of.

- The past 6 months I've become more of a cab/speaker whore, than an amp or guitar whore.

- Screw having a bunch of pedals and cabling.
Screw delay, screw chorus, screw you eq. I hate all of you.
I've thinned out the herd to only a gate and boost.

- I don't like overly high ouput pickups that much.
I can make them work, but they negatively influence my amp and cabs core tone too much. I don't need any "help" from overly high output pickups.
I usually end up lowering their height as a result.

Every time I think I'm coming to some kind of general idea of what I like and what gear works for me, something comes along and totally changes the game. That said, here are a couple things I've decided lately:

When I play Floyd equipped axes, I'm almost distracted by it and over use it way too much
10's sound the best as far as strings go (for me at least)
I like 25 1/2 scale a bit more than 24 3/4...unless I'm having an on day with my LP :D
The Mark IV is a work horse!
All amps should have external bias points/adjustments
I don't hate v30's anymore
GAS is a mother fucker!!!

1. I am a tweaker / tinkerer / modder, in a bad way. To the extent that it takes away a lot of time from my actual playing. I discovered that I need a simple setup that deters me from modding it in any way, and then I actually play it more.

2. Sometimes, a V30 or a Duncan JB works just fine, despite everyone and their mother hating on them.

3. I recently came to the conclusion that I might actually LIKE ceramic magnet pickups. That was a big shocker.

RE: V30's, they need to be broken in and used at loud volumes, also they are perfect for live uses in a band mix. I LOVE them in my Diezel cab. It's a pretty old cab though so the V30's might be made in england as well.

Also I've learned that cab construction has as much an impact on tone as the speakers.

I learned to never base what amps I like off of the internet or albums, you'll never get that tone unless its the same gear, same mic placement, same room, etc...

Finally I've found that I sound like me no matter what I play through if it's decent gear.

P.S. after all my gear whoring I've finally settled with the fact I'm a marshally el34 based guy. :D

I love basic Fender Stratocasters but they need to have aftermarket pickups to handle high gain well.
