Gear revelations: Had any lately?

I'm coming to the realization that I'd rather have multiple cabs (with different speakers) and a good channel switcher than a bunch of amps with only one cab.

I am a Marshall guy... That is all.

Is that why you own Ampeg, Mesa and Peavey amps and Avatar and VHT cabs?

1. I like 6L6 valves more than EL34

2. The balancing of a mid heavy amp with a scooped speaker often doesn't give desirable results.

3. I don't apreciate Gibson guitars. Being iconic matters less than a QC department.

4. Planet waves cables are shit (or maybe I'm just having bad luck)

5. I'm really bad at diagnosing amp problems

6. My hands are small and not enough to play 11s but I'm still adamant that 11-50 is my favourite gauge, and worth working on strength for.

7. Any gutiarrist who isn't versetile isn't really worth shit. IMO

8. Shredding is boring unless it's different or extremely well composed.

9. Playing guitar has made me apreciate progressive music alot more, to the extent that about half of the bands I'm currently listening to are labelled 'progressive' or 'experimental' Though it's just a phase, I'm sure.

I am SO done with $$$$$$$ pretty guitars.
What $$$$$$$ pretty guitars have you ever owned? I don't remember you posting/talking about any you actually owned yourself...

Steve

Only big gun I own is a Hamer Monaco which is one fine instrument for sure but................

I should have worded my statement to state " Not gassing" for $$$$$ fiddles due to my own findings and feelings. Take a $2000 Yngwie for an example, imo the clone I built is just as good as the real deal Fender. Talking new prices here btw.

Take the new Charvel Warren Snake, I love it but I already have three Charvels that pretty much do the same thing and they are almost 1/3 the price which leaves more cash for amps, fx, etc. Well the 3rd is not here yet.

Spreading the funds in other areas to conclude my explanation. Would rather have one guitar, H3000, and 4x12 cab than one guitar.

I had a big revelation yesterday...I don't play loud enough to get my amps to sound really good too often, so I am thinking about selling them, and getting an axe fx to run through my monitors, and when I need to crank it I have a 412 and a big power amp.

I will be having some nice for sale threads in a couple of weeks, Wizard Metal, maybe the Mako pre that I am getting next week, maybe even my Peters

no matter how much cool gear I buy, Ralph and H are still going to call me an push me over the edge on more gear to buy being the relentless fuckers that they are.

there isn't enough room left on my bench to mod any more amps...

no I will not sell off my SRV sig strat to help fund an AxeFx

My latest revelation is that I am going to have to build a Metro amp kit. The next revelation will be deciding on which one.

Another one that I had is that cabs with multiple speakers especially ported ones sound very different at higher volume levels. 1-12 sealed cabs don't seem to have as much of a difference.

1. I prefer rear-mounted speakers

2. Some day, depending on the amp, you'll need to learn to use the volume knob on the guitar. That day came with the arrival of the Dr. Z Carmen Ghia.

3. If the gear is good, try wiring it up in series. It sure is nice to save 4 rack spaces and 4 spots on the surge protector vs the mixers and switchers etc.. It just might sound better for what you want to do.

4. Even though I'm a hair metal guy, thick strings DO sound better.

5. If you've done fifty pickup swaps on one guitar, maybe the guitar is a dud. sell it.

6. Laying lots of tracks or using a looper for layering? Use less chorus.

7. If you don't NEED an EQ unit, don't use one.

8. Noise gates are band aids for the weak

9. I prefer good distortion pedals to TS clone overdrive pedals.

10. I don't like the gear ratio of Sperzel Trim Lok tuners. Not precise enough.

11. Even if you have awesome pitch, use a tuner. It saves LOTS of time, and doesn't make you sound like a jackass tuning up on stage.

12. Playing outside with a book of music? bring clips to hold the paper down to the stand. It WILL be windy.

In the past few weeks / month, I've realized a few things that I feel have helped me in my never-ending tone quest. I thought it would be cool to hear what other people have learned - what sort of "Aha!" moments other players were having - in addition to sharing mine.

Mine are:
1. I don't care for ceramic pickups for getting awesome, smooth lead tones. Alnico all the way.
2. Thin strings don't sound as good as thick strings. End of story.
3. 25w G12Ms sound great at low volumes, but with the amps I have, break up too much at higher volumes to sound amazing.
4. Mesa V30s are much, much better than regular V30s.
5. Uberschall with Uberkab is incredible.
6. Low action doesn't equal the best tone.
7. Low pass filters are necessary for distorted rhythm guitars on recordings.

Please, post away!
Wow! I don't agree with everything you said here.

So my gear/tone revelations are the exact opposite of what you said. :D

I'll add - I prefer a 100 watt Marshall heads over all..but if you can't crank one a 15 - 20 watter is cool too for gigging, not the same but cool.

Oh...and the audience couldn't care less about your gear or your tone (unless it's horrific and actually ruining the show) so use a modeler if you like them, no one cares.

Certainly that makes sense. I think you can understand my confusion though...

I do notice a difference between the Charvel Custom Shops and the Pro Mods, but it is nothing a little steel wool work and some playing time won't cure... I guess I just like crazy graphics and birdseye maple necks and silly stuff like that and I'm willing to pay for it. Wouldn't sell my Suhr Guthrie for anything either. It is an incredible guitar, and yes, it IS $$$$$$$$ pretty... but, I like having one guitar with a pretty quilt top that is also a great player and is very versatile with a lot of tones possible...

Everyone has different priorities, of course!

Tom Anderson has helped me come to the realization that his guitars are awesome! Seriously, I want an Anderson Classic Strat in Sparkle Orange.

The height of your speaker cabinet in relation to your ears has a direct effect on -
1) How you set your tone controls
2) As a result of #1, the mic gets something more useful
3) As a result of #2, your soundman or recording device is getting EXACTLY what you want him/her/it to get
4) Therefore, better tone :D

a few more:

5. The more I play my Friedman modded Marshall, playing metal to pop to country, the more I like the way it sounds.
6. For best results match your amp to the right cab.
7. 4x12's sound better than 1x12's at any volume level.
8. Big amps = big sound.

I'm starting to feel this way too. :(

Even the best EV-loaded thiele 1x12 in the right room will only get you 90% there.

By "That is all" I meant that was really the only revelation I have had lately. Not that I was a Marshall guy and only Marshall.

No matter how hard I try to use other guitars, I really like recording with my Les Paul.

A boogie MKIV recording out into a presonus tube pre and a software cab emulator sounds pretty good.

Scarlett Johansen is smokin (I'm watching the black dahlia right now, she's just smokin)

Scott

Mine have been:
1. I am positive that the only amp that will always make me happy no matter what is a Recto
2. I love E 440 tuning
3. Dimarzios are for me and nothing else

thats about it thus far

Fender Custom Shop Relic Stratocasters are the shit!
Old Marshalls still rule! and old Fender amps
Never should have sold my old analog pedals, only to buy them back a 3 times the cost and they dont sound the same as the magic ones i had.
Don't fuck with a perfectly set up guitar that plays and sounds great....same with amps.
No other current echo unit can match a real tape echo and feel the way it feels....soo MUCH money spent on echo/delays and always go back to an echoplex.
Pat ( Mentoneman) still has the best tones I've heard on rig talk.

IMO of course..

Ciao-
A

The ONLY Marshall gear I get along with are either HIGHLY modded Marshalls, (Cameron, Titan, etc..) or the JMP-1. just can't get along with any of the others....
