Gear revelations: Had any lately?

I like plexi style amps with a tubescreamer - preferably the TS-5, Celestion Greenbacks and Duncan Distortion picups. Also like the Neo9 single coil for a stratty bridge style sound. Pretty much put all that together over the lst couple years and I think I'm done.

The 3-way switch on the e906 mic is NOT just a novelty, lol, and is actually very useful. Wish I would've sampled it sooner instead of leaving it on the normal/neutral position all this time. Today I tried the low pass position and it was incred sounding with my particular amp (QR).

I've had this revelation for quite a while. Every modern high gain head I've tried isn't even worthy of licking the sweat off the balls of a stock 1959 or 2203 Marshall with a good pedal. I'm not saying those amps aren't fun in their own way but when it comes to what I want to use live and recording, it will be an older design Marshall and some pedals.

Also mahogany body and mahogany set neck doesn't mean it will sound like a GIbson. Unfortunately only Gibson's do.

Neck through guitars have no more beef or sustain than a set neck. I've never heard a neck thru Jackson or similar guitar, even mahogany made sound as full as a good Gibson.

Actually I've often been surprised that neck thru, shredder design guitars don't have any more beef or sustain than their bolt on neck brothers. All IMO of course.

Yes I have had a recent revelation.

Brian Wampler is a fucking genius

His pedals kick serious ass and his Pinnacle Limited can make a crappy MIC solid state combo sound like a hot rodded Marshall

I can get perfectly awesome tone with my ht-5
My Ibanez does everything I need

That's about it

The height of your speaker cabinet in relation to your ears has a direct effect on -
1) How you set your tone controls
2) As a result of #1, the mic gets something more useful
3) As a result of #2, your soundman or recording device is getting EXACTLY what you want him/her/it to get
4) Therefore, better tone :D

The Crowther Hot Cake is truly an underrated stomp box and I don't think it will ever leave my pedal board.

Guitar's volume knob is your ONLY friend.

Those Winged C are worth it.

Work with your amp more than a day before selling it.

You can never be too old to rock on a stage - This is not gear related but I had to mention it.

I AM a Gibson Les Paul man.....just love their tone....and absolutely love a good majority of their pickups...and don't hate any of them.

The Titan amp is my absolute favorite amp for that Marshall/Modded Modern Marshall tone I've had in my head forever. It can capture every tone I would ever dial for any genre I would play and it sounds just amazing live and tracked.

Having said that I'd like to get a pre-500 Dual Recto or something real thick, saturated, and meaty in the low mid department to run with that....it'd be heaven.

Also, I love V30's :)

i agree with this one

I've realized I need more money to keep up with my GAS!!

had a sad one today...as much as I want to love my Gibson, it's all aesthetic....It plays good but we just don't get along....back to my Ibanez!

except at Rig-Talk, where your character will be judged based on whether you own the "right" or the "wrong" gear.
That's bullshit. Pure and simple...I've never heard those type of judgements here.

which is why when i run sound for shoegazers who come with their dimed ac30s behind them flamethrowing at the audience i develop a twitch in my left eye. almost as bad is mesa guys with bass dimed and gain on 10.

my revs:

i want my peacemaker back, modded by rockstah, and a plexi 45 se loaded to the gills with NOS glass

i want sniderman's two rock

i played a 66 bassman head, and a metro jtm 45 recently and want both of those

i want mike landau to program my axe fx until i approve

i miss my maxon od820

Your what gets here tomorrow?

I have come to the realization that I am an idiot and that I need to just knock the shit off and just play the guitar.

Lately I've been using k100 and Mesa v30 with my uber and quickrod and it sounds really good, I'm also boosting my quickrod and like it even better now. I discovered it's ok to boost a splawn.

In the past few weeks / month, I've realized a few things that I feel have helped me in my never-ending tone quest. I thought it would be cool to hear what other people have learned - what sort of "Aha!" moments other players were having - in addition to sharing mine.

Mine are:
1. I don't care for ceramic pickups for getting awesome, smooth lead tones. Alnico all the way.
2. Thin strings don't sound as good as thick strings. End of story.
3. 25w G12Ms sound great at low volumes, but with the amps I have, break up too much at higher volumes to sound amazing.
4. Mesa V30s are much, much better than regular V30s.
5. Uberschall with Uberkab is incredible.
6. Low action doesn't equal the best tone.
7. Low pass filters are necessary for distorted rhythm guitars on recordings.

Please, post away!

1) yup, right there with you
2) ditto, but not liking that truth,, thankgod for DR's
3) don't know, i just play what comes with the amp
4) never tried em
5) never tried em
6) see 2
7) don't record so much but i'm sure i'll find out

would like to add

8) boutique pedals are not 200 bucks better than the thing they're cloning, ditto boutique modded pedals. they're better, and i'll keep the collection i have no problem, and stick with the ones on order, but if there's a well made TB alternative that's not too pricey (ronsound or stomp under foot) i'm going to go with those.

i nearly cried last week when i realised the stock TS9 i was trying was not much worse than my keeley modified 808.

further on that, boutique pedals are genius of marketing. seriously, who in the crowd is really going to know the difference? by and large the only person that hears it is you.

and before anyone disagrees i love my pedals, as you love yours. but seriously, just listen to them with a stock version. is it really worth the ridiculous price you paid?
