Looking for pickup recommendations for a Gibson LP Custom BBR7.

I usually go for the SD 59/Distortion combo but might want to try something different. Some contenders I was looking at were the BK Ceramic Warpig, BK Painkiller... or even possibly the BK Holydiver. The guitar has a solid mahogany body... no maple cap... but believe it or not, sometimes they are tonally on the bright side.

Suggestions?

SD Black Winters. I just put them in my 68 reissue LPC and they are incredible. I just bought the standard black set and soldered Philadelphia Luthier "correct" PAF gold covers on them if you wanted to keep the gold look and not have to go Custom shop

Hands down....No doubt......Gibson 500T....I have them in almost everyone of my guitars....I have tried many pups and these are the best i ever came across....And i would say they work best in a LP...

I was thinking about these as well. Did you find them bright enough in the LPC (i.e. not too muddy with enough cut)? I know they have some chunk to them.

I can't argue with you. These do sound great in LPs. I've used these several times, and bounce back and fourth between the 500T in some and the SD Distortion in others. 500K+ pots, no tone controls, and they scream.

Without knowing the tuning or what you're playing I voted PKs. I had them in my last Custom and they slayed in drop C.

The HDs kind of fall apart tuned that low, the bottom gets really mushy.

I haven't tried the Warpig in a LP, it's sort of bass heavy and I think it'd be too much.

If you go that route throw up your thoughts, will ya?

Plenty bright, but I have a maple cap, ......you are 100% mahogany on the BB7?

Tuning: Mostly standard 440... sometimes drop D... rarely drop C.

As for what... metal. All kinds. :D

Lol. Jason has some killers vids. He sounds great in all of em... so it's hard to be objective. He bought my first Herbert from me... the one in his vids.

His demo of the SD Black Winters into the Randall does sound killer.

Yep.. no maple. Just 10 lbs of solid mahogany.

I used to hate these pickups, but after swapping out the pots for 500Ks, and switching to PIO caps, I really love the way the 57 Classics sound in a LPC. They have a really cool "grit" when using high gain, and clean they sound nice and chimey.

I myself can't see spending double the amount on BKP's (although many love them...so no offense) when there are SD sets that are exactly in the same tonality and range of the BK's. My $.02 not worth much.

In the price range of bkp I much prefer the motor city and wolfetones to any bkp's ive tried, especially wolfetone

I've tried the Wolfetone Marshallheads before (used to talk to Scott aka Marshallhead all the time lol)... but want something with more output. Any experience with the Blisterbucker or Timbrewolfe?

Yeah I have a Blisterbucker with an A5 magnet and I like it. It has the tightness and focus I wanted that I found a little lacking in the Marshallhead, but I prefer everything else about the Marshallhead, but that's partly because I generally prefer lower output pickups. I don't have any bkp's at the moment to do a side by side comparison with, but I like it better than I remember any of the bkp's being and I've tried almost they're entire lineup of high output pickups. For the most part, I find bkp's to be not as raw, organic, or growly as the pickups I've tried by Motor City and Wolfetone. They're usually too polished for my taste.

Right now, the high output pickups I'm curious about are the Arcanes and Fishman Fluence series. I'm getting an Arcane Luxxbucker bridge/ BKP VHII neck installled in my Mayones Regius, so I'll see how it compares to my Marshallheads (my favorite humbuckers so far) and eventually I gotta try the Fluence too

BKP black dog set, or BKP rebel yell set. I have the black dogs in a PRS singlecut trem and they are vintage but aggressive with the juiciest neck pickup I've ever tried.

I have the rebel yell set in an Edwards LPC copy and it cuts through, has a bit of the chainsaw gain sound to it but they are highly responsive to picking dynamics and control settings. It has compact but not absent bass response and a lot of presence. Would characterize them as bright but rich sounding.

Another fan of the Bareknuckle Rebel Yells and Black Dogs in Les Paul's. I don't know that super duper high output is necessary with the amps and gain you will use so I don't think the War Pig would be a good fit. I would go for the Aftermath by far ahead of the War Pig in your Les Paul with the specs you mentioned. The Juggernaut has some very cool characteristics in a lot of guitars and does a lot of things well just to complicate your choice even further. :)

I swapped my 498T for a Motor City 2nd Degree BB. Love it!
Still have the 490 in the neck, lowered it away from strings a bit as it's a bit hotter.
