Michael Romeo from Symphony X. Terrible Line 6 tone.

he uses engl fireballs in the studio exclusively with no guitar effects, all effects are post recording. sounds pretty heavy and good to me :dunno:

live his tone blows - he only uses line 6 because he hates tube-amp upkeep and tonal variations. thats the only reason he plays them in that instance.

Randy Rhoads

Incorrect. Max Norman was a crappy recording engineer in 1981. If you think this was bad tone for 1981, you don't remember 1981. What do you think Ted Templeman could have done with this more accurate representation of Randy's real tone? It would have been SICK! Because live, it was huge.

YEAH
Max Norman also did some crap work for Mustaine's weak tone. People beat the shit out of Bob Rock but face it,Hetfield's tone on the black album was SICK,something Flemming Rasmussen could never do.
As far as bad tone? Yngwie's tone is bad,it always sounds old and crusty.
Dimebag was hit and miss from album to album.
Meshuggah has terrible tone, but they stomp balls everywhere else.
Paul Gilbert has bad tone, but his playing makes up for it,plenty of pick attack.
I really don't like Slayers tone either.
+1 to yngwie, Slayer, Meshuggah.
I saw Meshuggah open for Tool on the Lateralus tour, and I hadn't yet heard their recorded stuff at that point. I fucking HATED their music live!  It was soooo terrible sounding. They used Pod Pro's that weren't set up well at all and their mix was horrendous. I dig them now that I've heard the albums, but that was probably one of the worst live shows I've ever seen/heard.

BTW, Tool went on after and put on one of the most amazing shows EVER!

I used to practice in the same place where they had a rehearsal room in Shrewsbury NJ. I remember walking past their room and watching him play a few times, he was really good and his tone in person was good. I can't remember what he used because I'm going back 11 or 12 years. Interesting how they had/have no local following at all.

The usual responses...but I'll go with steve morse and steve Howe. Victims of bad production would be alex skolnick on the early testament albums and George lynch before lock and key (although I think greasygeo will disagree).

randy's recorded tone sounded bad to me,but the live sound was amazing.
Totally agree. I love his tone on the Tribute CD.

Tone is totally subjective. Those guys that are selling tens of thousands of records/CD's are connecting with lots of people. Some may not like the tone but many many others do. Rhodes was a great guitarist and did the most with what he had back then.

I would imagine those slagging on Rhodes could not wipe the sweat off his nut sack when it comes to the great songs written and millions of fans world wide. That guitar sound ruled the rock/metal world back then. Anyone that picked up a guitar back then wanted to play that riff to Crazy Train. That tone/sound did not suck. It totally rocked. Trashing it comes across as somewhat arrogant posturing by botique gear cork sniffers. Opinions vary, but what have you done that is universally loved? Someone is not going to like it, no matter how perfect you try to make it. Is sure does not mean it is weak.

And Hendrix???? That terrible tone in Hey Joe turned the music world upside down the day it came out.

satriani, petrucci, and gilbert all sounded good on the g3 tour. i love rhoads' tribute tone

i think dimebag's tone was just that.. dimebag's own tone. i heard "walk" on the radio tonight and got into it. i don't want my guitar to sound like that, but it suited him

Alot of guys HATED Satriani Surfing with alien TONE.......

I never paid much attention to the tone....
the playing was KILLER!!

Just because somebody doesn't like a certain guitar tone, doesn't mean they are slamming that guitarist.
Hence-Good guitarrists with bad tone. It's an opinion.

saw megadeth / slayer / testament live a few months ago

best tone was from Kerry King from Slayer
Jeff Hanneman tone sucked.

megadeth chris broderick had cool solo tone (thanks axe-fx) but his rhythm sucked.
Dave Mustaine tone was shit overall.
Sounded muddy and not enough gain, not punchy..

testament was fair.
