Dimebag had great tone.

Every guitar player from Opeth. My favorite band, but their live tone sucks. And someone needs to make them start using piezo pickups on their electrics or mount an acoustic on a stand.

dimebag did have great tone.

kirk hammet? no wait, he's not the best player in the first place, thank god for hetfield

Dimebag and Paul Gilbert are the two that immediately come to mind.

Incorrect. Max Norman was a crappy recording engineer in 1981. If you think this was bad tone for 1981, you don't remember 1981. What do you think Ted Templeman could have done with this more accurate representation of Randy's real tone? It would have been SICK! Because live, it was huge.

randy's recorded tone sounded bad to me,but the live sound was amazing.

I've always thought Jimmy Page's tone was too thin and had no balls. Satriani's tone has always bothered me. I love both players though.

I have to add Satch's older guitar sounds (thin, trebley and too much sizzle on top)

and the guy from Dragonforce. He sounds like he can shred his ass off but IMO he's hiding behind layers of that thin and processed rocktron prophecy crap sound and tons of compression/delay. Don't get me wrong, he has skill for sure, but plug him into a 800 or a dry amp and then I bet he'd struggle.
