I keep trying the FX8, then moving away from it and back to a switcher + pedals. It works great at what it does, and the effects sound great and are flexible. My problems are:

1. I love trying new stuff all the time on my board.
2. I'm constantly tweaking stuff.
3. I like simplicity and don't use 75% of what the FX8 has to offer.

With the FX8, you're bound to having one manufacturer provide all of your effects. I love swapping new (and old) ODs and other things on and off depending on my mood.

I'm constantly tweaking stuff when I play live - amp settings, pedal settings, etc. Between songs, sometimes even during songs. Delay sounds a little too wet in the room? Kneel down and dial it back a hair. Need another couple repeats? Bend over and nudge a knob. Phase sounds a little overbearing right now? Dial it back. I want to be able to do all of these things, on the fly, without having to access menus, scroll through pages, contact mission control, etc... :D

Finally, I just like simplicity because I don't use most of what the FX8 has to offer. I'd rather have 7-8 stand alone units I really love, will actually use, and can tweak on the fly when inspiration hits.

For those reasons, a switcher and pedals have been working out better for me. Granted, not everyone is as musically and tonally ADHD as I am and all of the above may not be an issue at all. Just depends on your preference.

^^^^This. I'm exactly the same.

Im visual, I need to look down and see the knobs...if its in some high tech mapping and scenes my eyes glaze over and say fuck it. lol

All great posts and suggestions here! I can understand where everyone is coming from for what they do and need. I am still leaning heavily toward the FX8. The main reasons being I'm not a tweaker...I usually set my fx and forget them. I never bend down and turn knobs at gigs. I take care of all of that beforehand. I'm not a big stickler...I find a delay I like, set it the way I want and then I will rarely ever touch it again. When I had the AX8, I was constantly tweaking the amp models because I could not get them where I wanted them. (glad to be back to a tube amp...I don't touch the knobs anymore!) but with the FX, I hardly ever changed them once set. The cost of the FX8 used is going to cost me much less than what I'd have to spend on a switcher and individual pedals that are the same quality as what the FX8 gives you. A Boss ES-8, Timeline, H9, etc...is going to push me well past the price point I need to stay at, nevermind the FX8 has overdrives (which I don't use but they are good to have). Add in the phaser, flanger, pitch/harmony stuff, and it's hard to beat. I would also need to spend more on a larger pedalboard and also a case for it if I went the pedal route. My board is a PT-1 right now and I really didn't want to go larger as travel gigs require smaller footprints sometimes. I'd have to keep the RJM switcher as well. I love pedals and think they sound great but for what I need to do, my budget and the type of fx I use, I think this is the way to go for me.

Saw that, thanks. I have an offer in on one on reverb for $150 less with a couple of humbuster cables.

I think you'll be very surprised how useful the FX8 OD's are.

Yes, I use one on the clean channel on my BE for some low gain tones and it sounds great

Always a pendulum for me...I'll swing to "all pedals" for a while, eventually going to a digital all-in-one solution, then I'll get the itch to try something new and swing back the other way lol       It's a brutal and expensive cycle that many of us go through.

Right now I'm GAS'ing hard for the AX8. About to pull the trigger on one of the Chinese versions, just too damn cheap to pass (unless I can find a great deal on a used one but they just don't pop up often and you have to strike fast if they do!). Thinking I might try and use it just for effects in front of some real amps also.

Having said all that....I'd totally go FX8. They sound absolutely killer.
