Or the lead from Sympathy for the Devil. Who let Keith do that?!?

like icepicks in the ears.
Another oddly produced tone. I believe this one was an acoustic with a pickup through a Maestro fuzz or something similar.

Some of the worse tone I've heard is anything from Jon Schaffer Iced of earth, demons and wizards...incredible playing and musicianship coming out of a tin can with speakers.....

You know, I was listening to that same Steely Dan tune the other day, and that tone is aweful, but it somehow fits that song. It sounds like a direct to board tone to my ears. No amp would sound that bad!

I think it fits because we're use to hearing it like that.

Oh man, I totally forgot about the gem.

Time to call Webster's- this should just be referred to as Dimebagging it

i just wanna know who the producer was that let the BTO gtr player solo on takin care of business so horribly out of tune

early page ala heartbreaker had some kazoo going on
nuge live sounded like he derived his distortion from cranking his dual showman stacks = OW
rik emmitt blazed but tone... ah yeah no.

no worries i have a closet full to back you up on that one:D

how about worst calls in rock?
"yeah Klaus why don't you take a breather. I'll handle the vocals on this track and Rudy can take the solo."
= uli fail.

Hmmm...
Not my favorite tone...
But a billion people from that era who know nothing about music can hear it and instantly recognize it as him and him only
Maybe he knew exactly what he was doing ;)

That's some terrible tone. I'm pretty sure that wasn't Keith. IIRC it was either Mick Jones or Mick Taylor.

I'm gonna have to go back and listen to some of that stuff. I always thought Page was a great hook master but a sloppy player. I don't remember a terrible tone but I'll check it out... same with Randy B.

I was driving back to work from lunch today and Steely Dan's "Reelin' In The Years" came on the old radio. Funny, the cool hook everyone knows has pretty good tone, but, what really gets me is the lead guitar. The lead lines are pretty cool and the playing is great, however, the tone is just terrible. It sounds fizzy and buzzy. It sounds like a cheap 3” portable radio with a blown out speaker!!! Somebody get me some bug spray so I can kill that damn pesky mosquito. :gethim:

...I still dig the tune.
It's just a fuzz box that gives it the buzzy mosquito sound. Lots of people dig that tone, just not us...

Steve

that is what old dudes call good tone because they don't know what good tone is :)

Uh. Old dudes created great tone. Youngins have spent the last 25 years or so destroying what others have built. ;)

To be fair I'm an old guy at 49 and I agree a lot youngin's don't know good tone if it hit them in the head. They do know gobs of gain and bass though ;)

No fuzz love? ;)

Sometimes this is the result of being too "Artzy Fartzy" Steely Dan has been guilty of this on more than one occasion

Agreed!

Until recently, just about anything from Paul Gilbert. His Laney tone is thin and lean. His Marshall tones are much better.

Amen to that!

I hate to say it but I'm not much of a Malmsteen TONE fan. Yes, he is the Neo-Classical king...'just can't gel with his tone...'flame suit on. :gethim:

Anything from Pantera!

THERE!!! I said it! Shit tone but damn ol' boy could play!

I really hate to say this... as much as I admire dime's playing.. I honestly think he's a bit overrated. I guess for metal, he was a great player.. but to say he was a great guitarist.. and I know that you did not say it here, but I have seen many people call him the greatest and this and that.. I don't think so.

He was a great guitarist. Greatest? No, of course not.

I'd say he is arguably the most influential metal guitarist since Iommi, which is a pretty huge deal

EVH, Randy Rhoads, Tipton/Downing, Chuck Schuldiner, James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine all disagree ;)
