Dime and Randy Rhoads were the first two names that popped to mind for me- two of the best ever, but their tones... :aww:

I used to think Randy's tone was IT back in the day. It's funny how my tastes in music and tone has evolved (or devolved    )

Anything from Pantera!

THERE!!! I said it! Shit tone but damn ol' boy could play!

I really hate to say this... as much as I admire dime's playing.. I honestly think he's a bit overrated. I guess for metal, he was a great player.. but to say he was a great guitarist.. and I know that you did not say it here, but I have seen many people call him the greatest and this and that.. I don't think so.

He was a great guitarist. Greatest? No, of course not.

I'd say he is arguably the most influential metal guitarist since Iommi, which is a pretty huge deal

Uh, Hetfield is infinitely more influential and innovative than anybody since Iommi.

There's really no argument here. It just is what it is.

really? no ones gonna say it? SLASH !!!! worst sounding lead and rhythm sound. can't believe anyone would want to replicate that weak marshall les paul sound. should have run a stomp box to fatten it up. and don't get me started on his "bending just below the key" november rain makes my ears cry blood.

Mick Sweda from Bulletboys...for an 80s album produced by Ted Templeman (VH) the guitar is thin and weak. What he plays is ok, not great...but better than CC DeVille (another shit tone), Mick Mars, or Joe Harmonic (Richie Sambora...the steady barrage of pick harmonics in "Wanted Dead or Alive" solo make me cringe everytime I hear it)

Hmmm...I actually like Slash's tone on his CD with multiple singers. To me it has a raw in your face natural tone....'just me I guess. :D

dimebag had lots of good recorded lead tones for a solid state rig

randy rhoads was much worse, imo, althought he sounded good live
slash was awful as well

malmsteen is the worst of all

I was driving back to work from lunch today and Steely Dan's "Reelin' In The Years" came on the old radio. Funny, the cool hook everyone knows has pretty good tone, but, what really gets me is the lead guitar. The lead lines are pretty cool and the playing is great, however, the tone is just terrible. It sounds fizzy and buzzy. It sounds like a cheap 3” portable radio with a blown out speaker!!! Somebody get me some bug spray so I can kill that damn pesky mosquito. :gethim:

...I still dig the tune.

I agree, but can't help from wondering if any other tone would have fit the mix better. Sort of like Paul McCartney's bass tone. HORRIBLE when you hear the solo'd tracks, but PERFECT in the mix, and any other tone wouldn't have worked to get the vibe.

Ok..so some of the tones you guys have trashed I didn't think were THAT bad lol..Rik Emmett? Ok no VH 1 or 2 but hey it's just a decent boosted 800 tone..Randy's Diary tone was decent..If Dimebag had used a Marshall, well it wouldn't sound like him..give me a list of some of your FAVORITE tones..(and get your flamesuits on lol)...

Vernon Reid. Never thought his distorted tone was good on his recordings. Just got home from seeing Living Colour, his tone was amazing not to mention the playing. Looks like he's running two 2ch Rectifiers and a stiletto combo. They were amazing!

Since CLEARLY not all ears are created equally, nor are all preferences in alignment, nor are they required to be-- What does it matter??

I don't think Rik Emmet is bad at all...I LOVE Thunder Seven ! Alot of this has to be looked at during the period in which it was recorded...Hendrix tone sucks, Page on Heartbreaker ? Oh my God...yuck ! Limitations of technology must be considered I think...if Page had high gain amps ? Maybe his solo in Heartbreaker would have ripped !

Totally agree paulyc..equipment AND the time period are absolutely to be taken into consideration. And Zachman you are correct also..everyones' ears are different and in the end it only matters to the player AND the listener..does it really matter?? No but it makes for fun and animated reading lol..I saw Paul Gilbert many times from 89-95 and people tend to rip on his tone but live it sounded great to me..

I used to rehearse right next door to Paul when he was in Racer X. He's a machine, and a really nice guy too.

Okay... a few of the guys who I think have good leads, but lame tone are:

John Mclaughlin
Steve Howe
Frank Zappa
George Harrison
John Lennon
Jimi Hendrix
Frank Gambale in the 80's eewwww
Guthrie Govan

Ha! Do you remember that "GTR" album back in the 80's? Speaking of Steve Howe..ugh that was some bad tone. Pulled that disc out of the mothballs the other day lol..Yeah that's pretty cool that you used to rehearse next to Gilbert way back..I had a girlfriend back in '89 who was a DJ in mpls and we got to meet Mr Big after a show..they were all very cool..Paul took some time to talk a bit which was nice of him..usually everyone's in such a rush which is understandable

Hey Zachman btw..Great avatar! The guy doing the flip is funny...but the freaking Cat is HILARIOUS!
