I tried out some Cool picks, great grip but the 1.5 ones i got were just too thick for me...loving the Ultex Jazz IIIs right now, although I really want to try those max grip ones just to see which I like better...cheers,

Most people are probably going to just tell you "whatever feels the most comfortable for you" which really is all that matters. Personally I've switched over to the Jazz III picks made out of Ultex. I think they're amazing, especially for lead. I really like the Ultex material as it's durable as hell and has a really nice feel to it when you're hitting the strings. Also that pointy tip just seems great for alternate picking. If you don't like the smaller pick sizes you can just try some Ultex picks closer to your Fender picks.

+1

If you were a begginer I'd say buy a set of Dunlop Tortex 1mm and just get used to them, then later on decide.

But Dunlop Tortex work great for me, I used Jazz IIIs for a while, thought it was great for my playing because I was doing alot of shred and it improved that but really it wasn't doing much.

I'd avoid sharp picks because, allthough they're easy to pick fast with and feel really nice to angle, there's really not very much material hitting the string which some would say isn't good for your playing, I'd agree with that statement but to each is own.

Look at (if you're sticking to Dunlop, which is my favourite pick manufacturer)

Dunlop Tortex
.73 Yellow
.88 Green (What I use)
.100 Blue

When I was getting relly into metal and such and was a bit sloppy, I liked a really rigid pick, and I still do for rhythm chugging, more complex picking patters don't work as well for them. I went Dunlop 500 1.5mm, Dunlop 500 1.14, Dunlop Tortex 1.14, then 1mm, and now .88. The .73 are really flexible, too much for my taste, if there's an in between gauge I may try it, I don't wanna follow my trend too much though.

I might note I went from using 10 - 11 gauge strings when I used 1mm, I use 11s now and prefer .88. If you're using heavy strings then lighter picks are a bit easier, to my playing style anyway.

BUY LOADS AND SEE WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU! I know deep down my info is useless.

Thanks for all the recommendations. I am not sure which 3 or 4 picks I am going to try yet. I will post what I end up trying.

I used to use the Fender Medium tortoiseshell only...then I found the "confetti" red/black/white colored ones...they sound better (brighter) than the tortoiseshell...but they shred faster and get bits of "confetti" all over your guitar...

then I got into the standard size Ultex pics...those are great but they NEVER get broken in...so I used a buffing wheel to break em in.

Then I got into the Jazz3...black nylon....and wanted to try that shape in Ultex....got them earlier this week,...I LOVE THEM.

good luck.....pics are cheap....order a ton.

I use Dunlop Jazz IIIs for lead work and Dunlop Tortex mediums and sometimes thins for rhythm. Definitely thins when I'm playing acoustic.

USE WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU.

I am looking for recommendations to try, so I can figure out what is best for me. ;)

Interestingly on all my years on internet forums, I very rarely see threads on picks. Threads on strings seem to be 2-3 to 1 compared to threads on picks....

Just placed the order. They didn't have cool picks or I would have tried those. Anyway, here is what I am getting to try:

Dunlop tortex standar .73, .88, and 1.0mm
Dunlop JazzIII's
Snarling dog's .73 and .88 mm (buddy wants to try them)
I found I already have Dunlop Nylon .73 and .88mm. Forgot I had them, I think they might be good on acoustic.
