Guitarists you just don't understand

Honestly, and not to play holy in any way, but I genuinely have a hard time thinking of any obvious candidates for my personal list of guitarists I don't get.

I guess because I never really bothered to listen much to music that I didn't actually felt spoke to me, and also I kind of respects most musicians.

Even Kirk Hammett I don't really have anything particular against, even if he isn't exactly a natural guitar genius, and although I kind of lost all respect for Metallica long ago, though especially Lars Ulrich, and more so because he is a giant jerk, than because he doesn't bother to practice drums anymore, which he never actually was exceptionally great at to begin with.

But after all Metalica still managed to create 3 truly great records, even despite the fact of Lars Ulrich deciding that his ego power trip should have priority over giving their fans a properly mixed record, as far as goes the third one (oddly enough though all their up till now 3 bass players seems like they were/are genuinely great guys).

I can respect that Metalica at least all had the skills to create great music once (and that at least Cliff Burton was a truly original and innovating musician, though I guess that's kind of his achievement alone, that James, Lars and Kirk can't really take any of the credit for). .

I guess the only guitarist that crosses my mind who's guitar play I really don't get would be someone like Yngwie Malmsteen, like: "let's speed classical music inspired distorted melodic riffs up till the point where they sound more like someone having an unusually extremely controlled epileptic seizure, like one perhaps could imagine an epileptic android would, so that they doesn't make any musical sense anymore, and let's further more execute them without any sense of soul or feeling whatsoever, so that it ends up sounding like a crazily speed up distorted midi guitar track, without any use of the humanization function" (well, admittedly except for the fact that some very guitar specific techniques are really hard to copy realistically using midi programmed samples).

Though I suppose it is kind of impressive on a technical level, more to do with sports than music really though in my opinion, and I have never really been a great fan of any sports to begin with, and speaking about sports, at this point many amateur guitarists can do the same, and some even surpassing him regarding technical skills.

But after all I guess Yngwie should still get credits for being one of the absolute top tire pioneers of an unique guitar playing style and genre, even if I personally don't get it at all, and don't really think it has much to do with playing actual music.

Guitar sports, I guess more specifically guitar gymnastics/athletics, that is what it is, as far as I am concerned.

The legends mentioned here, wow this board has high standards lololololol

how about this - Kirk Hammett is most underrated songwriter/riff composer in metal. you cannot be a Metallica fan and dispute that. his credits speak for themselves.

there can be a difference between 'not getting' a guy and thinking they are no good. eg - i dont listen to Joe B songs but i respect his ability. i would never say he sucks only because he's not my taste.

high standards, we have...

So the Trunk Top 5 thread go me thinking.

Certainly do not want to create a sh*t storm or spam fest.

We all have guitarists that we just don't understand.

Post a few up and maybe we'll all learn something or learn to be more sympathetic/open :dunno:

Go...

^This

No reason to make more out of it than needed :)

back on track:

1) George Lynch - i should love him, because i love his contemporaries, but he never did it for me. monster player though. i am not a fan of some of his effects use, that plays a part. i know he's great but i dont get him.

2) Andy McKee - lots of pub when he first emerged, i didnt think his style was that innovative. i guess i missed the nuances.

3) Robert Fripp - i have no idea what he's doing, i do not understand theory that well

4) John Petrucci - sort of the above, monster player but i found his playing too progressive and gymnastic

5) djent, any/all of it - im not convinced i even know what this genre is? making your pick attack sound a certain way? idk

John 5.. i think he's awful. Tone is terrible, chops sounds like some dude at guitar center. Gets all the praise for some reason.

Side note: George Lynch is awful now. He peaked hard in the 80's - 90's. Met him briefly at NAMM and I wish I had not.

and this is what makes these threads kind of pointless because opinions are just that..opinions and none can be wrong.

I love early Malmsteen (first 4 albums) ..... I can hear so much soul and feel in his playing compared to 90% of the guys that were around at the same time..doesn't make you wrong or me right

Only name I can think of is Tom Morello ..... a lot of it probably has to do with the bands he has been in as I don't care for any of them. My struggle as a player is to write/play solos that sound in tune, in key and "natural" sounding...he jumps on that damn whammy pedal and makes everything sound like he is strangling a cat
