Been messing with Eb tuning and with 9-42s the guitar feels too slinky if that makes sense, bends and vibratos feel awesome but the guitar feels a tad sloppy for lack of the right words.

Any input on this? I am thinking a heavy gauge may be in order.

Yeah I am on a big VH kick.

I use 9's at 440, 10's or 11's in Eb, depending on the guitar. 9's feel sloppy to me, too, in Eb.

I read EVH used to use Fender Bullets which were 9-38 tuned sometimes lower than Eb!!!!! Loud amps compensate for a lot.

on 25.5" scale i use 10-46 for E and for Eb i use 10.5-48 (D'Addario). the slight half gauge up works perfect for making up for the flat tuning. i found 11s were a bit too stiff yet they work perfect for me in E on 24.75" scale.
I play exclusively in E flat, and I'm the same way, only standard 9 set on strats and 10s on LPs and Wolfgangs.

The standard Fender guage that Ed used (either bullets or 150XLs) was 9-40...I've used them for some time; good strings.

11-52 for both.

gyrrrrr. Its a manly gage it is

There's no such thing as a manly gauge, I use 11-56 in E on my Tokai and I'm a pussy!

Good thread demonstrating why asking others for the right guitar for me is sort of stupid, even guys that play the same type of music have different answers like Steve and Mark. I do think my heavy attack and 2mm pick are the problems.

Thanks guys, I have to find that happy medium myself. The looser strings are fun to play, wide Yngwie vibratos feel like you are playing a scalloped neck

The low E is the one I have to straighten out.

10-46 standard tuning.

11-48 Eb tuning.

12-52 D tuning.

welcome to 1978 fruitsteak.

Lahhhve youuuuu!

I just went to 10s on my fender but it's not set up yet so it feels heinous at the moment
I had Pete Skermetta refret my Tyler and set it up for 10s so that one is rockin and the extra tone on cleans and low gain rule.
Hi gain...pfffff you could string your gtr with baby hair and spaghetti and be ok.

10-46 for standard, drop d, and eb/drop

everything below that i go 10-52, it's really all i've come to learn that i need.

I play in Eb exclusively and I use 10's. The 9's just felt to loose.

You must have built up your hands trying to take that chevelle around corners to play 11s :D

9-42 in standard tuning feels very similar to me as 10-46 in Eb. For some reason using 9-42 in Eb can work on a strat but not as good on a LP, i guess it's the scale length?

definately try 10-46 if you do anything in Eb, 10-42 works great for Eb too.

i currently use 10-46 for D standard and am starting to think about going to 11's - 10's work great when they are first put on but once they get worn in, its too slinky IMHO.

GHS Boomer customs 9-46's for both E and Eb  I perfer the Elixir nano webs but can't always get the gauge sets I like.

For me, 0's for both tunings but for some guitars, I have to use 10's in Eb because of the too slinky factor.

I tune to Eb, and my Les Paul scale guitars are 11's, and my strat scale guitars are 10's. I play GHS boomers.
