i love my herbert. wanna try a vh4 and a hagen (badly). but i REALLY love my ultra lead.

i dial the bass and depth back on my herbert because i use the isp sub. i don't feel the bass tones are too slow at all. but it isn't as tight as the UL, which i think is the amp that works best for me.

with the mid cut on, it is kinda industrial sounding. but i kinda like that too. i never thought i would own a herbert, but am way glad i finally scored one.
vht UL is a fine amp, i love them and would take it over the vh4 anyday!!!!

I personally dont like the voicing of the vh4 or how the gain sounds, i hate when hetfield uses it and ive seen hetfield and demartini play it live and wasnt impressed. its a personal opinion and some people may not understand how i could dislike this amp so much but i cant help it, i went as far as to buy one and spent money on it and that i didnt buy it and waste my money with the intent to hate it, im glad theres people who like it and thats cool, i even wished i could like it, if anybody wants to send me a 2011 vh4 to demo i will be glad to give it another shot and maybe it will change my mind, im the type of person that will buy something if i love it, my vh4 i owned was a 2004 model and the other vh4 i played was 2007,08,09 models. i own alot of guitars and tried them thru the amp and used some different pickups and cabs but i just didnt jive with it. but theres plenty of people that do like it better than the most amps.

the herbert isnt as tight as a ultra lead or a vh4 but i boost mine and its tight enough for me, its tighter than a recto and plenty of guys that play fast riffs do just fine on a boosted recto, its got a massive low end but i keep my lows around 10:30 and the depth at 11:00 and thats plenty, last time i used my herb live i wished it had more upper mids and was kinda bummed but i think net time i will use my mesa v30 cab instead of my uberkab and having all v30 should do the trick.

So what your trying to say is you like the Herbert? :)

haha, yes! Didn't expect the thread to get this juicy but I like it. This is a great discussion and it's cool to see how people are split down the middle about the two. Like I said originally, different strokes. And who knows, maybe it was a combination of tubes and year revision that just made this particular VH4 fall short of my expectations. I didn't want to come across as completely dismissing the VH4.

I'm going to have to finally get off my arse and take some clips of my Herbert.

I'll admit, channel three on the Herbert took a bit more tweaking in terms of making it stand with that glorious channel two. But I did get it, and now I love it. I have chan 3 set where it delivers the goodness and body of channel two, but with a bit more warp and sizzle. Screaming for leads and still awesome for rhythm.

At the end of the day, I love Diezels.

Both amps are junk..so i bought a $200 Roland Cube to replace both them

After owning both for quite some time i leaned towards the VH4 only b/c of the midrange aspect of the amp. Both amps slay!! But the VH4 fit my needs better at the time. Now run in tandem...forget about it!!!

The two together sound amazing for sure. Best of both worlds!

If we lived closer I'd have you over to check this thing out! Funny thing is that I wouldn't have kept it if all I had was my V30 loaded Diezel cab..of all cabs the Mojave with g12h30's was the eye opener with my VH4. That was it! Thats the shit.
