I personally dont like the voicing of the vh4 or how the gain sounds, i hate when hetfield uses it and ive seen hetfield and demartini play it live and wasnt impressed. its a personal opinion and some people may not understand how i could dislike this amp so much but i cant help it, i went as far as to buy one and spent money on it and that i didnt buy it and waste my money with the intent to hate it, im glad theres people who like it and thats cool, i even wished i could like it, if anybody wants to send me a 2011 vh4 to demo i will be glad to give it another shot and maybe it will change my mind, im the type of person that will buy something if i love it, my vh4 i owned was a 2004 model and the other vh4 i played was 2007,08,09 models. i own alot of guitars and tried them thru the amp and used some different pickups and cabs but i just didnt jive with it. but theres plenty of people that do like it better than the most amps.
the herbert isnt as tight as a ultra lead or a vh4 but i boost mine and its tight enough for me, its tighter than a recto and plenty of guys that play fast riffs do just fine on a boosted recto, its got a massive low end but i keep my lows around 10:30 and the depth at 11:00 and thats plenty, last time i used my herb live i wished it had more upper mids and was kinda bummed but i think net time i will use my mesa v30 cab instead of my uberkab and having all v30 should do the trick.
