Maybe the old ones are better than current production?

The older stuff ALWAYS sounds better than the newer stuff, unless of course you have newer stuff and are selling it in which case the newer sounds better.

That's right, I just got a JB that was wound by Flavius Cornelius on a Roman winder from 47 A.D.
It fucking RULEZ

One other question I have is what could each of these boutique builders possibly be doing differently build-wise or materials wise than the others? They all insist that they are using better materials than the next guy or that they and only they have been able to get their hands on the BEST sounding vintage PAF's ever. How many of these guys have dissected multiple PAF pickups or spent time with tons of different vintage guitars and been able to really assess how these pickups were built?

I think there is a BUNCH of nonsense and TONS of hype involved in this boutique pickup market.

When I relic my guitars I use NOS Milspec sandpaper that sailors used to "hail stone" battleship decks back in the early 40s, it is extremely expensive and hard to come by but to get battlescar'd guitars the right way there is no better solution. I swear by it.

I think I need a bunch of guitars with different pickups and different sounds. I've always been a Duncan/EMG/Gibson guy as far as pups, but I think I'm going to try a WCR Darkburst in my LP, an Afwayu in my G&L and maybe an Angel Dust in my Schecter.

I tried some BK's last year and the Nailbomb and Rebel Yell's were great too. IMO pup differences are subtle but can be as important as changing speakers.

No, just tried a Painkiller and it does just that, it rules. Also picked up   a Bill Lawrence 500XL on a even swap.

Have you heard of Russian Unobtanium? I didn't think so. You can't handle the truth.

Wasn't that the shit they were mining for in Avatar?

So, after reading the whole thread... I think I agree. I had an Anderson and a Bare Knuckles... never got around to installilng the Nailbomb, because by the time I got it, I realized that I was right all along liking Duncans since I was a teen and that the 500Ts sounded good in my Gibsons. Plopped a JB in my Jackson and I am happy for now. I see no reason to spend an extra hundred bucks for someone's signature, as if a pickup was the magical x-factor to good tone anyway.

Just for Juggy  , maybe I need to give EMGs another try. I hated the 81 so much I couldn't wait to get them out of my Les Paul. I really shoulda tried the 89 in the bridge...

I just use an eq pedal...I've never wanted to mess around with swapping the pups in my Parkers because a.) with the preamp and everything I won't tackle it myself, and I'm too cheap to pay someone, and b.) not just any pup will fit in the cavity. So hitting an eq first in the chain has allowed me to tweak frequencies and output signal without a pup swap...

having said that I do slightly prefer the Duncans in my Mojo over the Gen 1 Dimarzios in my Fly Classic, as they're a bit fatter sounding (some of which is probably due to the mahogany neck as well)

Seymour Duncan Black/Backs sound about 20x better than the stock Dimarzio pickups in your Fly (if that's what you have in there). You won't regret making that swap.

I'm the ONLY EMG guy so far....
I was a DIE HARD EMG user for the last 10 years......
until I heard my buddies guitar that had an Suhr Aldrich pickup in it.
What a KILLER KILLER TONE!!!
I picked up the MCP Afwayu and have been happy since. Little more low end then the Aldrich but alot of the same tone.

For the last 15 years I've been using a Duncan Distortion (bridge) and Duncan '59 (neck) and never felt the need to switch.
But then I heard a guitar with EMG's and thought I'd give it a try....BIG MISTAKE! This started the P'up swapping for me!

But I've found a keeper in the Suhr Aldrich in the bridge. Right now I have a Dimarzio Humbucker from Hell in the neck, that I'm not really diggin on. So I'm still looking for that perfect Neck Pickup. :bash: I've sent and email over to BG Pups for a suggestion...no response yet though. :dunno:
