Here is how I setup my W/D/W system....
Main amp speaker output into two 4x12's. I intercept the signal with a custom Suhr ISO box. That signal goes into a MLC custom stereo mixer. In the mixer I use either a Korg DL8000R or Eventide Eclipse effects unit. The MLC stereo mixer mixes BOTH the dry signal and WET signal going into my power amp.... which is a Mesa Boogie Strategy 400. I then run out into two 4x12's placed on the outside of the two dry center cabs. It's important to note my "wet" cabs have both wet AND dry signal mixed together. So all four 4x12's will have my original dry signal mixed in. Depending on my mood, I may add an EQ into the loop of my dry amp which will affect my entire signal chain. At times I may use a separate EQ for EACH side of my W/D/W cabs. I EQ them differently to fill out the sound. The Eventide Eclipse also has micro pitch shifting to further enhance the sound. I use midi to control my effects units as needed. Note that I may use pedals out in front of my main amp... which could be distortion, chorus, etc. At times, I've run two amps out front with each going to a specific side of my W/D/W mixer (I have two custom Suhr ISO boxes). I tend to not do this often as it creates ground loops which are a major pain in the ass. lol.
