Hendrix/SRV tone

I find I can get what I consider good SRV tones through my Bogner XTCs. I'm running a 20th EL34 and a Classic in stereo. On the clean channel with eqs as follows:

20th
P: 10:30
T: 2:00
M: 11:00
B: 3:00
V: Max
G: 1:30

Classic:
P: 11:00
T: 2:00
M: 11:00
B: 3:00
V: Max
G: 12:00

I have an Earthquaker Tone Job EQ and the Dunes OD as well as a Blackout Effectors Cadavernous reverb in front of the amps with a Lehle Dual SGOS to split the signal to both heads. I typically run them with the amp boost on both amps. If I want the SRV clean thing I kick on the the Cadavernous and or the Tone job and it gets me the clean tone I'm after for the SRV/texas blues thing. If I want more than clean I throw on the Dunes.

If you want a great Hendrix tone, some type of smaller marshall plexi and a berkos 3rd stone fuzz, or the germanium experience if you have the cash. If using the fender amp clean route you can layer various overdrives (xactone has really good ones) after the fuzz to dirty up the clean amp a bit to get that organic vibe. SRV is pretty obvious through the rest of the thread.

My pops has a Fender Twin Reverb that he gets some really superb SRV tones with, no pedals, but he's also not a gear head like the rest of us are. I've been thinking about getting a Bogner Alchemist for a while now from this video someone posted years ago..

On my Kemper, my favourite amp profile to cop those kinds of tones is the Ceriatone Trainwreck. I have a ton of fun messing with it, would love to play a real one someday!

Nice! Who's the Author? I've been searching for a good SRV type tone on the Kemper, but there's so much to go through. Got any other suggestions for something sparkly clean?

I always thought SRV used a bassman. Not sure where I got that from

I was under the impression SRV used 2 amps. One set clean and the other set moderately dirty. Then, the stacked tube screamers.
Super Reverb or Vibroverb or BOTH.

Each amp provides a key piece to SRV's tone. Then the screamers set with NO gain, cranked level to push the amps MORE.
Obviously the Strat is another key tonal element...
There's plenty of speculation out there.
The most important part, IMO is 2 amps set differently...that blend is something you'd be hard pressed to recreate with only one amp.

correct.

even though i have played through each amp on it's own extensively, the blend was something of a revelation to behold.
it reminded me of some of my "boutiquier" amps ala two rock or carol ann in bouncy response ala great fender, with a fullness in the mids and 3d creamy texture of the plexi, and vintage blackface sparkle on the top end--like the best of both worlds all at once. you definitely couldn't get that sound with just one amp.

that whole setup just confused me. I guess I'm gonna be in Mono for a long ass time.
it confused me at first and i am a rack fanatic and totally into keeping track of landau's setups.
but the difference between mono v w/d live sonically is significant enough, once you get the hang of it, to make the hassle worth it.

Here is a pic with a Superlead and the Steel String Singer. When I think of Stevie, I always think about the Austin City Limits shows, where his rig was massive and sounded so great. I know he used smaller amps too in clubs and whatnot, but the sounds he got with the big amps was very cool and knocked me out.

SRV used higher gauge didn't he? I recall reading he used 13's.
Even tuned to Eb which alot of his stuff seems to be at, 13's are freakin thick.. to me anyway.

This article says the same as well as cool info on Jimi and some others... J.P. EVH, etc..

Pretty cool read
https://www.premierguitar.com/articles/S ... ths_Part_1

13s are punishment imo
i use 10s and like tuning to Eb, and my action and tension are already a struggle compared to 9s but the fattening of tone is worth it

i would consider 11's in a hybrid set MAYBE but i'm in no rush to hasten carpal tunnel :D

i remember reading rumor stories about SRV's fret hand fingertips splitting due to his heavy strings and style, and he would fill the cracks with crazy glue between sets, and while the glue was tacky, he would attempt to add skin to the artificial irregular tips by bouncing his sticky fingers against his opposing forearm robbing skin to create a little barrier over the glue and enhance the feel.

I use Dunlop 11-50 for Eb.
At one Point i used Ernie Ball 12-56 for D Standard but the G String was a pain in the ass. 24p...That was awfull.

Interesting Article but James maybe used 9-42 in the old days but not when this Article was written.

I just bought a set of GHS Burnished Nickel Rockers .011 to .050 for my Strat, I usually use .009s to .042 in Eb so this is going to be a challenge...lol, but I hope the tone is worth it. Right now, I'm using a silverface Pro Reverb (40 watt)(that will get blackfaced eventually) and a Concert II (60 watt) (Rivera era) into a 2x12 cab with Altec 100 watt rated Alnico speakers, I have Eminenece Blue Tick Hounds in the Pro, the Pro gets an Analog man modded TS9 in front and a 4x10 Marshall Club and Country (100 watt) for clean with 4 Mojotone 10s...

No combo's here.

People have tried & failed for decades, only a guy from Tejas' could get SRV tones ...

He was the only one to ever do a Strat justice IMO.
What about Hendrix, Gilmour, KWS, Buddy Guy, Eric Johnson, Trower, Blackmore, Malmsteen,etc...? None of them "do a Strat justice"?????

I want what you're smoking...

SRV on Austin City Limits was killer. I bought a strat, TS808 and fender amp because that performance.
