Apart from the glaringly-obvious financial incentives to "fail" in that the focus has been on developing "treatments", not cures (as with most diseases, for the purpose of milking the patient), it's bad science. There's something I've said on the board a few times over the years:
You can bark as long and hard as you like up the wrong tree and it'll get you
