I thought the virtual PAFs were pretty terrible. I pulled them out after a week. Every PAF type in this thread sounds better than those things. Thin and sterile sounding.

I had a VHPAF in my Mcnaught and it was cool, but on the bright side. I can see how it might be too bright for a Superstrat based on that...

I had mine in a paul at first, I gave the neck pickup away to a friend and it didn't sound that bad in his paul. I think he ended up yanking it eventually. They just really seemed to lack character and were on the bright/thin side for a PAF. I would take just about any pickup in this thread and a few more I can think of over them.

I'm not knocking your opinion, but most people have been digging the virtual PAF. Obviously if it didn't work for you then it didn't work for you. But ALOT of folks really loved them when they came out.

I have an old (70's) Dimarzio PAF in a mutt that I built...one of the best PAFs that I've ever come across. They show up on ebay frequently and usually don't cost too much either. I think there's one on there now IIRC.

The Pearly Gates is another one I like but it's not as "sweet" as some others...although its still low output, it has a little more attitude.

It's not f-spaced is it?

No, but the strings catch the outer edges of the "E" poles with an F spaced bridge...no noticeable volume dips.

You don't need F-Spaced. None of the guys whose tones we chase and admire were using F Spaced pickups. That's a marketing thing IMO

Actually an excellent point. Psychodave always swore that f-spaced doesn't sound as good as regular. I've never tested it out myself... but... yeah...

Ok well it's not a good test but I tested it...

It won't make your awesome rig sound like shit but like I said, I would take any of the pickups mentioned in this thread and I have played most of them. I would take a SD 59 over it and I am not a big fan of that either.

Yeah I know... Especially pickups. I'm not the biggest gear whore in the world, but my pickups change often. LOL! :D
Although the JB/Custom/Duncan Distortion thing has been kinda constant for several years.

On my watch list. Thanks ;)

Old thread revival alert :
Anyone use the Duncan Lynch Super V pick up yet ?

If u like a 78 or Tom Holmes 455 u HAVE to try the motor city second degree black belt!!!

Does it matter what pickup you use when your mids are all wierd to begin with? :D

Let me +1 the comments that Chubtone and Sah5150 made with regards to the Mojave pickups, as I love mine as well. Vic Mason at Mojave Ampworks made some of these custom pickups, and offered to sell a few of them to Mojave amp owners. I bought two from Vic at the time, and Chubtone sold me one of his a couple years ago. They're lower output, but sound fantastic.

You can't go wrong with most of the other pickups mentioned already, but I'd also like to suggest either a Suhr SSV or DSH, as those sound great as well in my Suhr's.

I have done a lot of pickup swapping in my time and there are several pickups that I like. But I have been using the Arcane Brownbucker for about two years now and it is my favorite slightly hot PAF I have ever played. I put them in two guitars two years ago and neither of them have ever come out and I don't think they ever will.
