Hey Curt (Chubtone) You were right!!!

So how's the flanger setup, everything dialed down to zero? Is it just that particular pedal or could you get the same effect from another?

BTW clip sounds killer, I love Ronni!

I know that I'm not playing this 100% correctly but I just went home for lunch and its good enough for me. All I would have to do is hit this recording with a bit EQ and add some highs and its close enough for me lol
Mission accomplished!!!

YOU ROCK!!

if you listen to it using media player...turn on the eq and add some high end

10,000 luvas in onoeoeoeoeoene!!!!!!!

yes please tell us the setting, I can't find my old pedal, so I'm bidding for one on ebay - well done, love Ronni

Ronni uses an old Ibanez wah into a Boss Ce-2 into a Boss BF-2 into a Boss OD-1 into the Roland Space Echo RE-150 in that order. One of those pedals is the secret sauce and it's the one you would least expect and the one you hear no sign of in Le Tekro's tone. I always wondered why he even had that pedal. Not anymore. That should narrow it down.

I don't hear it either. I think i had one of those and just gave it away at some point. How does he set the controls on that flying Purple people eater? :D

Fixed

Both sound good to my ears... is this secret sauce similar to the PQ3 type unit? I think I lost track at mention of the flange... the 10,000 lovers sound reminded me a bit of that classic RATT tone too. It was tighter though and obviously different, but the character. Whatever they were using, the tone translates well to tape.

BTW- the singer does grate on the ears after a bit though he does have crazy pipes. They remind me of a cross between Triumph (vocals) and a not as good as Europe.

Absolutely.

Ratt, Like so many other 80's bands slammed the front end of their amps with the Furman PQ3 mainly on the out of the cellar tour/recording.

The dominant freequency I hear is 750-800hz.

Ronni got the same affect by using the OD-1 / Flanger combo in front of his amps which basically did the same thing. How the hell he decided to do that is a mystery to me lol.

IIRC Don Barzini's recommended that Mark Day take the TNT recording and run it through a Magic EQ Program. The program analizes the sound and will give you the freequency bandwitdth of teh recording and the Dominant Freequency was, go figure, 800hz. I also think that the Flanger also tamed/cut the high end and scooped 400hz as well which is pretty much the recipe for both tones, just a different way of getting there.

Check this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GFrsiNq ... re=related really sounds mid heavy. It has that quality that reminds me of using the frown eq on my BOSS GE-7. Really bumps everything while taming the top end. I just finished watching a few TNT clips and on some of the songs it almost sounded like a cocked wah but not quite..... hence arriving back at EQ. I'll tell ya though, the sound of the 80's is mid EQ pushing before you get to tape!

The Flanger in front of the amp set on the settings mentioned in this thread does EXACTLY what you are hearing in tthat video and It is like running an EQ before the amp. It will also have that Cocked wah sound!

I forgot to mention:

That A regular ge7 before the amp can and will boost the mids if you set it that way but it wont sound the same because you can't adjust the que/bandwidth. The secret to that tone is that the Flanger narrows the bandwidth @ 800hz which gives you that exagerated sound.

all the best!

So wait a minute.. given the prices today for PQ3's, sounds to me like the boss flanger is the poor man's 80's eq in a box? I'll need to start back at the top of the thread to see the settings. I am very interested in trying this out. I actually preferred the clip to the real thing! Ok flanger on the list.

It Really is! The thing about the PQ3 is that you can pick many different freequencies to screw around with but if you like that Notched 800hz sound (Which I love..others.. not so much hahaha) It will do that sound in spades and the real Kicker is that I got a Bf-2 flanger used on E-bay for $40  They went up a bit but you can still find them cheap.

You use the Flanger and a Bad Monkey (another $30-$40 pedal) in front of a Marshall or any other amp and you have instant 80's hot rodded tone provided that you like the 800hz sound :hys:

I have a line on a used BF-2 for 50$, think i might pick it up. I do like the sound but surprisingly what really sold me on it was your clip. I like the tone pre production EQ'd. Here's one additional question though.. does the "manual" knob increase the mid hump/frequency shift or the effect of the drive you get from it?

It's worth picking it up even if you don't want to use it for the Letekro type tone hahaha! It's actually a great Flanger.

You don't really get the drive from the Flanger. It really works Like an EQ and the manual knob does exagerate the freequency. Having it on 10 is the most exagerated tone and backing it down lessens the effect.

The BF-2 will give you the Eq'ed sound and any Clean Boost pedal will give you the Drive.

I think I used either a Bad Monkey or a Boss OD-2 for the boost and the BF-2 in front of a Fortin Cali mod for that Clip.
Either way, regardless of what I used for the clip, I own both and used both pedals with that Rig and they sounded spot on.

The hookup is simple. Guitar into BF-2 ,BF-2 into a boost pedal and then into a ISP Decimator to kill the noise commming from the boosted signal and then straight to amp. The results were sick and if Im being honest, I liked the tone I got better then the Origina tonel but that's just me (I used more gain then Ronni probably did) lol :D

Alright I'm in! I can't be bothered dropping 400+ on and PQ3 and although this may not be quite as good, it'll do the trick and get that Out of the Cellar tone out of my system once and for all! But oddly enough with a JB, I wonder if i could get some Vitto Bratta tones.....

Update, picked up that BF2 and gave it a whirl with my lynchbox. Sounds as described and pretty killer! Having a hard time recording it properly but in the room with the cab it sounds great. I only have the first knob at about 9 pm so it is barely cracked for me. I am hearing some out of the Cellar like tones and some White Lion tone popping out at me. I'm going to try and record something. It is a noisy f_cker though... even with my ISP decimator at the end it adds some hiss.

Very cool!!

I found the best way to use it is guitar into BF2->Boost->Decimator-> amp. If you gate the signal hard, you should eleiminate the hiss
