Mesa Dual or Triple rectifier. That has been a great rock amp over the years.

MarkIII :D Good cleans, can do hard rock, and if you ever do need Some high gain metal you can get it at the turn of a knob. Plus it has one of the best lead channels around IMO.
+1 a Mark III will allow you to get a shit ton of amp for way under your budget.

I second the Sig X! An awesome all around amp. I only sold mine to help fund my elmwood M90, and really wish I still had it. Titans are awesome as well, met the builder at an amp fest and he and his amps were really cool!!!

Mark III.....
super amp for a good price. Leave you a few hundred left for other stuff...Pedals..etc.

Sounds like a lot of amps are going for less than I thought ? ;)

Splawn
Mark IV or III. (Mark III isn't great for switching on the fly.)

You might consider the Mesa Electra Dyne also. Those things are awesome.

Any of the 5150 series is excellent.

+1 It'll do anything you say you need. For rock and metal it's a killer!

BTW, the II/+ is more versatile, while the original has a better rhythm channel IMO.
