Peavey XXX from my experience. Death metal gain at 9:00 on the crunch channel.

I'm seeing all this metal love for the XXX & I just don't get it. My bandmate had one for years and it just didn't cut it for metal for me. The orange was not enough chainsaw and the red was too much bee buzz. Could be my ears, tastes, need for fresh tubes...but that amp always had a smoother rock tone on the orange (not metal)

To be fair, I hated playing that amp, but liked it a lot when others (more rock guys) played it

In module world, the Salvo 1666 has a fierce level of gain! I would like to try a Dragon ;)

No amp in the world can match this shitbox :

(No gain control, its fixed on 10. Can't get more metal than that   )

I've played some solid state over the years that had more gain ontop of gain, with more gain optop of that.

Surprised nobody said channel 4 of the Engl Powerball, sounds like it has a built in metalzone.

But 5150's, Engl, JVM's all have boatloads of gain. Other amps mention like the SLO or Herbert aren't in the same ballpark IMHO. Remember that the higher the gain of an amp isn't always a good thing, IMHO.

5150 for me..although, the line 6 insane does have a ton of gain too

Rivera k-tre has the most I've heard. Put the gain on 10 with the boost pulled and it's just insane.

Will have to be odd man out here and say no to the 5150.

Mak4 "Dorado" channel, hands down, the most gain - period.

Mo
I take it none of you have rocked the Dorado channel at 9 o'clock let alone 1 o'clock.

any amp with a Boss Super Overdrive, Boss DS-1, 3 Ibanez tube screamers, 2 MXR Distortion +'s, 4 Heavy Metal Pedals, a couple Bad Monkey's all them with the gain and level dime'd and 2 noise gates. ;)

Useable gain or unusable squealing like on the JVM ?
The 5150 III channel 3 has probably the most gain I ever played, but after a certain amount it's pretty much useless due it just get more compressed and squashed.
Tube gain stages do not define the amount of gain, insane amount of gain can be achieved by 3 triodes (that's 1 and a half tube).

I bet I can put an aggressive EQ on a somewhat lower gain amp and you'll think
it's much gainier than it really is...

I don't think gain levels have changed much since the 90s.... But the abundance of low end thump and searing highs give you the impression that it has.

Far and away the DAR FBM100.
do people even own these things yet?

Mike just finished several over the weekend. As I understand it he is filling backorders for the heads, then proceeding with the FBM preamp pedals.

A lot of modeler amps. Surprised nobody mentioned the Uberschall.

I borrowed this quote from H-C, and it's exactly what I am thinking...

"It seems to me that it is not so much about how many gain stages but balancing clarity with hi gain while having a unique or signature voicing. There is a certain point where more gain really doesn't do much but mush up the sound. "

Deizel Herbert.

Those two would get my vote.

If you have the Gain pot of this two on ~ 30%
you will have the full gain amount of 5150, SLO and
anything else mentioned in this thread

it's never enough gain for me, and that has lots of gain
that's without a boostpedal, that's just the amp, pretty wicked!
