Anyone try that Hiwatt Super Hi 33 yet ? I have see them for sale but not out in the wild, and haven't really heard any clips. I'm just curious how close they sound to super hi 50 from several years back. I know they are PCB now but if it sounds remotely similar that's fine. It's just for a low wattage rig I want to build

Supposedly they're assembled in the UK. I looked at the 50 watt, but think they're a bit pricey. I'm sure they're all Chinese inside.

Orange has a lot of their boards assembled in china as well. also, The LANEY digbeth bass cabs are all made in china. as are most of the SSL audio products. seems the UK... is the new china.

The Chinese thing doesn’t bother me in all honesty, just because what isn’t made overseas anymore. This is just a home use thing. Ive always liked the tone of the HiWatt Super Hi 50’s from the original run, so considered this for what I’m doing.

The Custom Super-Hi 50 is hand-wired in the Hiwatt custom shop and they are still made. The Super-Hi 33 and 50 (not custom shop) are PCB and made in China. I have no idea how the PCB version sounds. And they don't use the same transformers as far as I can tell. The only clip I've found of the PCB version is from someone who profiled one. But that's not exactly the best representation of the amp.

For what it's worth, the 50W hand-wired ones I have/had are LOUD.

I have heard they are loud which is why the Super Hi 33 had my attention. I figured there would be some difference in tone, but in the ball park would be fine for what I am doing with it. I liked that it was lower wattage but didn't have EL84 powertubes.

Yeah, the clips of the profiled one don't sound much like the three hand-wired ones I've had. But again... those are profiles, not the actual amp so who knows.

6V6's, no?

Do it, and let us know!🤣
Honestly, I am contemplating doing just that. I found a place with a decent return policy just in case, and think I might give it a shot. I shall make the sacrifice for the good of Rig-Talk and those who want to know    :ROFLMAO:

Mod it for EL34s and report back.

A little surprised Ceriatone hasn’t done a Super Hi 50 “inspired “ amp.

I'd just go with the Super-Hi 50 - the $$ isn't that different and the master volume on the 50W is very good; that thing is painfully loud through a Mesa OS cab.

If they had, id definitely be buying. Nik's customer service is excellent ! I've owned a few of his amps and they were all great

Are there any advantages to going the 50 over the 33 ? This is a Rig I'm putting in my Travel trailer lol. That way, when I'm at my property working I still have a decent rig to play through

Fair enough but if you need something that's compact & packs a punch, why not get a Victory Kraken MKII 50W head? It's compact and packs a hell of a punch. Has big-boy tubes & can go full 50W or down to 7W IIRC.

The Super-Hi 33 vs 50 is pretty much going to be like between any 30W head 6V6 vs a 50W EL34: the later will simply sound bigger, have a faster, more punchier lowend as well as high-end extension. There might be exceptions to this but after having tried all sorts of 6v6 and el84 amps, I can't recommend anything less than 50W.

I owned a Custom Super Hi 50 and while it was very cool, I ultimately let it go because it was just too hard to play. Very uncompressed and open; kind of like a Wizard. Pretty much the furthest you can get from "brown"/"greasy"/"squishy" in a high gain amp. Very difficult to play high gain leads on it without a compressor. Very punchy, though, and had a unique sound. I could see it being good for something that needs fast, tight tracking for rapid picking single line notes that you want to stay super clear and punchy under gain. Fun amp, just wasn't a keeper for me
