Just curious if anyone has any recommendations for a good home use amps for a good 80s metal sound. Mainly for my charvels to play through for old hair bands. Not sure what is hot out there and if anyone has played anything nice lately. Any recommendations appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

I'm in the same boat.
When stuff clears up for me, I haven't played one, but the Splawn Streetrod combo sounds like it'd fit the bill pretty well

My closest dealer is 3 hrs away.. and i will try before I buy when the time comes.

Good luck, and I'll be watching this thread for other recomendations !

edit: for now - I'm using a VYPER 15 and it is OK for what it is

I think with any decent 30W to 50W tube combo and the right OD and Distortion stomps, you'll be able to dial in pretty well anything you need. Most of the amps of that era were Marshalls, some Soldano's, Hiwatt, etc. but they were all 100W+ monsters and their tone was created with high volumes and big SPL's.

I think stomps and a good tube combo will be your best bet.

2 cents,
V.

How many watts

If you are looking low wattage a Baron snot watt is pretty cool 10 watts or something

Marshall JVM in combo or head can get the tones you want. Try boosting the red crunch channel. Or the OD1 orange channel by itself. The master volumes works well on the JVM. Back in the day I used Hiwatts and DS-1 or SD-1.

I use my old Boogie Studio .22+ for that...great little amp that does 80's metal very well. And it has enough nuts to play small clubs if needed. I was asked to turn down a little bit at an open jam last week at a local club and I wasn't even mic'ed up...just used the amps 12" black shadow.

Depends on how loud you want to get. I have used a Blackstar HT5 or a Tweaker with boosts to get all kinds of tones at home but also use a RM100 for my hair band flings. What is your price range?

I love my Blackstar HT-5 for home use...does 80's well in my opinion. I boost mine with bbe green screamer and I LOVE it.

The Splawn stuff is great! On a cheaper note , check out the Jet City 20watt head with the Friedman Brown Eye and Saturation mod..

Streetrod.........done.

I bought one from a guys who owned it for a few days. I got tired of it after a few days and the guy i sold it to was selling it after 3 days. Nasty sounding amp, in a bad way, IMHO.

Yep modded JCA sounds great! Clips elsewhere in this forum...

I don't need tons of power. This would mainly be for playing along at home with the iMac and powered speakers. Price range varies not really a target set but 1500 or less would be nice.

Buy a used Axe-FX Standard for that - you'll be WAY happier than with any amp for this purpose... Also, if you decided you'd like a few different quality tones, they are already in there...

To get into an axefx what kind of powered speakers do you need? I must admit some of those clips sound very good

You could just playback through your DAW (iMac and powered speakers) and it will sound cool...
