Honestly should Metallica give it up and retire?

There are a lot of bands out there that are getting up there in age and really stinking it up. But those bands are still out there. My should Met have to retire because they are past their prime? I think they have earned the right to stay as long as they like by writting albums Kill em All through Justice.

I love Rob too, but this was a bad move on everybodys part. He doesnt fit this band. Where the Fuck is JASON when you need him?

I wanted to start this thread to give you guys a fresh perspective.

I liked the Metallica of the 90's and in the direction they were going. My OP states unlike most other fan boys that I like the 90's Metallica evolution not the 80's era.

I think their problem was listening to the fans and trying to write songs today like they are still from the Kill em All to Justice For All era. This is why we got sub par material this decade.

I also beleive there is lots of music left in these guys but its just not "metal" anymore. Nothing wrong with that.

My point is the Metallica part of the band is over and they should move to a whole new direction because by trying too hard to stay "Metal" they become a bad joke.

Tool is a good example of a band that evolves and writes music for themselves. Metallica just got lost along the way and started trying to write music for their fans instead of themselves.

I wish we could hear them with a lead guitar player that CAN ACTUALLY PLAY. The songs on Death Magnetic are actaully pretty decent but the guitar solos are downright pathetic.

What? He is a good player, and may kick Metallica back in a sort of Thrashy direction. He'd be a good influence.

Man, when are you guys gonna get over it !?!?

For me, 'tallica is up to And justice album... then there's S&M but that's it.

I kinda like the black album, but it's not 'tallica anymore it's modern rock. Good in its own fashion I guess.

After that, everything they wrote is not pertinent at all (IMNSHO), but they can do whatever they want, I just don't check that out. You know, rap is popular but I deny it's existance

I saw them back in 1986 on the Masters tour, before the got the Ozzy gig. Man did they kick ass! Cliff was unreal! For me that was the climax and it's been downhill ever since. But I did like And Justice for All quite a bit...

Mave Dustaine should just sell coffee instead of endorsing it. What's next coffee creamer?

I wish I hadn't watched that. Kirk's still a guitar hero of mine in some sense but that was painful.

I am guessing this is one of the first times they played it, and if I had to guess, they probably threw it in at the last second and practiced in rehearsal...

No excuse for some of the botch, but if I could suck that bad, I'd be pretty happy. :D

When they played it every night for the St. Anger tour, he nailed it.

I love some of their albums but over all their catalogue doesn't interest me too much. I really like Kirk as a player though, shame about that solo haha.
Should they retire... what ever keeps them happy...(or money coming in:p)

Who would benefit if Metallica quits? And what would that benefit be? Them getting icon status? Too late for that.
Plus, imagine you're James: You're enjoying what you're doing and you're getting a massive amount of cash for that. That is probably the fruits of a job done very well before. So why trash that by quitting?

Here we go again.

Mave is one hell of a sterile and cold sounding sloppy solo player with no vibrato at all. I love the old catalogue work he has done with Megadeth but...

Because Hammett's problems don't stem from being sloppy or having a terrible vibrato at all.

No. I think they can still be viable. They still enjoy making music, which is all that matters.

I wanted to give Death Magnetic a shot, but I won't buy that till they remix it without the clipping. :gethim:

I would rather have a Metallica in decline than alot of the artists that are out there now in popular music....

Hey, at least Dave can still play, and brings in new lead guitarists that are incredible.

Testament, Exodus, Megadeth, Heaven & Hell, Priest, Maiden all sound good to great in concert these days. All these bands have been at it just as long as Metallica, some longer obviously. Seriously, there's no excuse to sounding that shitty live. Metallica don't practice enough, don't care and never will again.

I liked most of Death Magnetic. I thought Lars was great for his innovations in the 80s. No one wants to force Metallica to retire; I think the OP was talking about music integrity and knowing when to bow out when you know you've lost it. Some fans are just so devotional they'll accept the shit Metallica puts out and call it ice cream.

I would LOVE to go to one final Metallica show and relive some good memories but refuse to pay premium $$$ for essentially a sloppy jam session. I've seen all these bands listed above in the last 4 - 5 years and have been satisfied with all of them. Again, NO EXCUSE for Metallica to play so poorly, ESPECIALLY when fans are paying big bucks to see them AND all their contemporaries are BLOWING THEM AWAY in the live dept.
