A big reason to have a strat is for the single coil sound and feel. I don't really like a single coil bridge pup much. Too thin and brittle. So I do like a SSS setup and use a single coil size DiMarzio hum in the bridge. I have one that has P90 flavor as of now. HSS is a bit cheaper and easier if you choose to make swaps.

Good lord, do you have a favorite?
I've never gotten along with scalloped necks...or singles in the bridge. ;)

Keep in mind that wiring a tone pot to the bridge pickup can reduce a lot of the brittle/harshness that people don't like about a single coil in that position. I find the stacked humbuckers to suffer from old technology - using a dummy load which reduces dynamic range.

All of my Stratocasters have the back tone pot wired to the bridge pickup.
The only way to go.

I love my Strat. It's a '74 neck '76 body hardtail. I built it to look like Billy Corgan's '74 strat that he played on the Mellon Collie tour + latest tour.

It has a loaded Billy Corgan pickguard and string saver saddles. Sounds amazing. Extremely versatile.

Here's Billy's.

Hard tailed with a Hipshot with one pup and an ebony board.

sorry i haven't been on lately to hear opinions. my computer shit the bed and just now got around to getting a new one. i have decided to get one with sss and down the road i'm gonna have another pickguard on standby with hss config and just solder and go depending on what i feel. to me i've been feeling like messing with low to mid gain tones classic rock style sound so that's why i wanted opinions on what to get and then i have others guitars with humbuckers which are hard to beat but then i can have different flavors of tone at my disposal. thanks for reaching out and letting me know what's good and not and the awesome guitar porn you guys bestowed upon me haha.

I prefer the HSS, but if you end up w/ an SSS, wire one tone pot to the bridge, and the other to the mid/neck so you can get away from the ice pick. I also have pre-assembled pick guards as you mentioned; with HSS, HH, mini HB, EMGs, etc. If your body routing matches your pick guard choice, you can swap out your electronics on a long break!
