How to darken/remove shrill from my setup?

Hey guys. Here is mysetup:

Guitar -> Pedal Tuner -> Compressor (only for cleans) -> Boss Super Overdrive (only for solos) -> ADA MP-1 -> TC Electronics G-Major -> Marshal EL84 20/20 valve power amp -> Marshal 1936V 2x12

My main issue is the top end shrill is driving me nuts. It was considerably worse when I was using my Marshal JMP-1 so swapped it out with my ADA MP-1 and got it closer to how I'd like it. I even ran a rack equaliser after the pre-amp to tame it, but I couldn't remove the shrill fully without just wrecking the tone and dynamics. I tried an EQ pedal in the loop without much luck.

My guess is it's likely the speakers, but I'd like to avoid buying another 2x12 if possible (wishfull thinking!)

how old are your tubes?

see if a local GC has a cabinet, ask if you can bring in your rack to try it with a few speaker cabs? A little white lie about looking for a cab, new or used, isn't so bad

Speakers and maybe pickups. What speakers are in the cab now?
Should be Marshall G12 Vintage. Personally, they're my favorite V30 type, but I could see them being the culprit here with that set up. EL84's can already get kinda ratty in the high end, and that upper mid peak from the G12's could be exacerbating the issue.

No need to buy another cab, just swap in some darker speakers to try out in it.

Good Celestion options that might tame the harsh high end/upper mids a little would be; G12H-100, G12-65, G12M-65 Creamback, G12H-75 Creamback, Redback, and the alnico Cream.

If it has the G12 vintage speakers, it's not the speakers that are shrill

All V30s have a high mid bump but that isn't the same as a treble shrillness

I would suggest that part of it is that your power amp is EL84s which are naturally high mid heavy, compounded with V30s which are also high mid heavy

You are technically correct. But that is if he is using the term shrill in the way you think.

Redbacks would tame the upper mid fiz that a v30 brings, but i think at the end of the day, a clip would go a long way to letting us hear it for ourselves.

I fought for years for that last 10% and am down to the last 2-3% now

Yeah that's the real question @ghosty999

When you say "shrill" do you mean high mids or do you mean the treble?

Because they are very different things and come from different parts of the rig

Yeah. I have tried to fix something before only to create a new problem. It sounds like you are close to where you want to be. You dont want to take a step backwards

One thing i am thinking about is the sd1 in the pedalboard. Even though you are using for solos only, it may be worth it to take it out monentarily to make sure it isn't always brightening the circuit/adding noise.

Another way to do it, is to add a tone sucking gate. It isnt the traditional answer, but it could get you exactly where you want to be

Those 16 ohm Marshall vintage speakers can definitely get a bit fizzy and shrill in the top end. Maybe try some of the new made in UK V30's. They have a rolled off top end to them so they are dark sounding. That and maybe your pickups can be changed?. IDK Try a JB or something??, I got one in a guitar and it's anything but shrill sounding, even with the 500k pots. Something with a alnico magnet.

An EQ should've done the trick. Lower those frequencies? Which EQ? An MXR 6 or 10 Band should've squared it up.

What kind of pickups and strings do you use?

What value pots are in your guitar?

What brand of tubes are in your amp?

What kind of cables do you have?

I think it's mainly the cab.
