Seems the next day some strings go flat and i have to usually retune everyday on my LP Classic. Any tips on making it hold tuning for more than a day :D

That's why I don't play Les Pauls

BTW....the Axe gets here tomorrow...I have a 2/50/2 coming next week

Sell it and buy a PRS.

I've never owned a LP that would stay in tune. My PRS rarely go out of tune.

Then you'd be giving up that great, fat LP tone for shitty, thin PRS tone. Not worth the trade off.

Yeah its starting to drive me nuts! All my other guitars need to be retuned once a month or something

What PRS has a neck profile similar to the 60's slim tapered neck?

I don't see having to tune a guitar every time you play it much of an issue. I don't have any guitars that don't need some minor tuning adjustments from day to day.

What guitars do you have that stay in tune a month?

Maybe try some locking tuners.

+1 - everything I have (even my acoustics!) that doesn't have a Floyd has either Sperzels or Planet Waves Autotrims. I actually prefer the PW, but my CS Jackson has Sperzels.

The PW tuners should drop right in the holes (and I believe the Grovers do, too).

RG1527, RG1570, Iron Maiden Strat, [insert floyded guitar here]

+1

Yep anything with a Floyd. My Suhr has been in tune for over a month now, if I don't abuse the whammy it can probably go longer. I am really liking the playability and tone of my LP though, if only it can stay in tune :(

My ESPs with floyds, my PRSi, my EJ strat, my Ibanez w/edge trems, my Charvels and Jacksons with floyds, My wolfgangs with floyds, etc... :) Unless I physically bump a tuner, my two PRS guitars stay in tune phenomenally well for non lockers - much better than the Les Pauls and other Gibsons I've owned.

my PRS are anything but thin. However, even if that was true, I'd rather have a guitar that stayed in tune onstage than sounded great. People tend to notice if you're out of tune moreso than your tone :)

I have an LP and a PRS and will attest to the fact that the PRS does sound "thin" when compared to the LP. However, it is not a thin sounding guitar by any means and it will stay in tune all night. The LP needs to be tuned every couple of songs (playing like I do), but the tone is just amazing. There are trade offs with both. If you love LPs, then just get a set of locking tuners, a graphite nut, and deal with the fact that it will never just stay in tune all the time. There's not much more you can do than that.

You've obviously never played an SC250. It killed my LP custom (which didn't stay in tune with direct replacement gotoh locking tuners BTW ).

I agree 100% percent. I have to do minor tuning on my guitars everytime I play. Why is that in any way strange?

My experience with les pauls is that it goes out of tune while you are playing it. Bend the 3rd string - out of tune. Even after having it professionally set up, etc. Quite annoying.

So what about a PRS makes them stay in tune or what about a les Paul makes them more prone to go out of tune? I mean a PRS is closer to a Gibson than say a Strat. Maybe there is a tweak to the les Paul that would improve its tuning stability....

Locking tuners on my '96. The nuts on the PRS are a different material too I think... Also, are the necks on the Gibsons quarter or flat sawn? Quartersawn tends to be stiffer and not affected much by temperature/humdity. My EJ strat has had to have one truss rod adjustment in the 2 years or so that I've had it - it's really stiff, and that helps tuning IMHO.

If you're having tuning issues in general while playing, it's usually:

1) tuners (and how you install the strings)
2) nut binding (ever get a 'plink' noise when tuning up? your nut needs lube!) ;)
3) not stretching the strings properly

I don't even think cheap strings makes that big of a difference, I have bought whatever was on sale at guitar center in the past and never had any issues.

For #2, I'd say your nut should really be recut, and lubing it is just a band-aid "fix." ;)
