how're the new mexican promod Charvels?

I have seen some great guitars come out of the Mexican plant. I got a mex Floyd equipped strat a few yrs ago new and it played and sounded better then a custom shop I had. It does suck that fender is charging same price as they were for USA and jap made but as long as spec is same and qc is good then I have high expectations.

I'm really curious, after all this talk, to try one of the Mexican Charvels. I have a MIJ San Dimas that I changed the pu's to (personal preference + some eye candy for me, myself and eye) and I really like the neck and well, the guitar overall. Too bad there isn't a shop that carries them anywhere near here.

But if all goes as planned, I'll probably buy before I try anyway :hys:

The USA Pro Mods were priced to the dealers to where we should have sold them for $999 and they came with a gig bag. A USA made American Strat also was supposed to be sold for $999 at that same time with a hard shell case. Dealers, as they always do, started lowering the price in their typical race to a zero percent profit margin.

The Japanese Pro Mods supposed to sell for $899 and include a $129 SKB hard case. A $229 difference from made in USA to made in Japan basically. Again, dealers kept making their price $1 less than the next dealer and leap frogging each other down to zero profit.

Now the made in Mexico is supposed to be $749 - $899 depending on features. The more expensive ones have figured tops. At the current time, a USA made American Strat now sells for $1199. If all things stayed the same, that original USA Pro Mod would be retailing for $1699 now and selling for $1199. It's been 5 years since the USA Pro Mods were released.

To exaggerate, my 1980 Les Paul Custom cost my dad $675 brand new in a hard shell case. I can't believe that since then, in order to make a guitar in that same price range, I would have to get an Epiphone and those were made in Japan and then production moved to Korea, and then it moved to China and they cost as much as my MIA one. :D

You don't get to do that, bro. Democracy does not mean "my ignorance is as good as your intelligence". You either get your shit straight and contribute factual information, or you sit it out. Plain and simple. Throwing your hat into the mix with a scholar like Chubtone is like walking into the ring and slapping a professional boxer after you've been watching Rocky movies. You're gonna get embarassed.

I appreciate the back up there MM, but I love the Rocky movies.

That's true. If I really believe in a product it's easier to sell. I am reserving judgment on these guitars until I play them. I think that's the smartest thing to do.

How often do you see me on here pimping the Charvel Desolation guitars?

Hey man, I know what the fuck a Floyd is, where they were made, who produced them and what the early ones looked like. I am going by the website.

http://www.charvel.com/guitars/?section=promod

If it says Floyd Rose Original, so do I. I don't give a shit about your Charvels anymore than that.

Easy dude. I was just trying to clear up a mistake on the specs of these guitars. I don't think I was showing you up or making you look bad in the process. Not quite sure I understand the hostility.

LOL @ how're and lol @ Charvels...any one can make those damn things. Who cares if a Mexican made it..they probably made it in the USA factory too.

I bought a Charvel...by mistake..I don't see the attraction............

I'm just looking thru new or used for a great charvel price point. I see that Steve K has a USA for sale for 1500 asking price. At that price you are getting close to used TAG or Suhr, or even a Luxxtone.

Unfortunately, the high end Charvels don't pop up in the ATL guitar centers very often used.

As far as the old glory days? He'll yeah they we cool!

Got this 87 MIJ from Daddys Junky music, with an Original [one of first made] Floyds for $200.

Threw in a EMG 81 and its golden.

I know some smartass is gonna say "MIJ didn't have a Floyd it had Schallers ...yadda yadda "

I could give a fuck. Its an awesome guitar and all i want, does the job & then some.

Low miles, Basswood body, indian rosewood FB.

Those early Japanese Charvels couldn't stay in tune to save their lives with much whammy use because the lock nut sucked on them. I'd take a newer strathead MIJ or even likely MIM over one of those every time.

The Floyd on the Mexi-Charvel is NOT a 'Special'. I don't know for sure if it is a true 'Original', but it's not stamped 'Special' under the 'Floyd Rose' stamp and the spring block is not cheap cast metal but is instead a polished 'billet' with a 'FR' stamp on the block. It also doesn't have any "licensed by Floyd Rose" markings as you find on other ultra-cheap knock-offs. I have 3 other guitars with 'Specials' and this one is better quality. Not that the 'Specials' are anything to sneeze at. I have a 'Special' on my Jackson Adrian Smith sig and it is AMAZING. I can dive-bomb all night and it stays in perfect tune. I haven't put this Charvel through it's paces live yet, but so far it performs flawlessly.

So, based on this, I am inclined to believe it is an 'Original' as stated on their website.

Mine stay fine, no tuning issues, none.

You're lucky, I never had one that stayed in tune that well and I've owned 30 or so guitars with those behind the nut locks. Even the USA Jacksons from that era had the crappy locks too. Maybe I just use the trem more than you do.

Thanks for the info, very useful. And clears up the question I had. :)

As far as the Floyd Rose…….the Charvels come with a Floyd Rose that is for OEM only. It's the Floyd Rose 1000 series. They don't sell them to the public and are for builders only. It's an original floyd rose in every way, but is made in Korea with slightly lower quality metal…..but it is still awesome. Just like Curt mentioned. It is stamped "Floyd Rose" and does not have any other marking, just like the original. It's the same ones they used on the American and Japan series. You can check it out here:

the early MIJ Model series Charvels were badass when you ditched the crappy Jackson floyd or kahler.

Also all floyds are not created equal.

I'm going to have to play one because as much as I love Charvels, I'll either bond with it or hate it instantly. I'm not looking for a Mexican Charvel to play as well as my DeMartini, but if it felt and sounds close to the U.S.A San Dimas I had a few years ago (got from Chubtone), then I'd be happy.
