no, 2013's sorry that is a typo...I own a 2012 ;) The 2013 Traditionals are supposed to be "solid" meaning no weight relief. all 2012 Traditionals have swiss cheese holes. The 2012 Standard has the new modern chambering.

Ah, gotcha. I like that modern chambering but don't know whether it's completely replaced the other type of chambering nor have I found out whether they're sticking with that method. I think it looks far more well thought out even over the standard chambering they were using.

the one method has so much wood removed it os more like a semi-hollow body, may as well as some f-holes to it ;)

I believe they only use that style of chamering on Historics these days. Everything else is modern, swiss cheese and none. I'd prefer swiss cheese or modern but if the guitar sounds great it doesn't matter. If I were playing at insane volume levels I'd be a bit worried about the full chambered ones feeding back but I don't so no concern there...if it feels good and sounds good its good and style of weight relief wouldn't matter.

I hear you on the confusion on so many variances of a Les Paul its a bit much to keep up with. I was a bit overwhelmed when I was on the hunt and a LP virgin. Then to make it worse Gibson had the issue with rosewood and ebony woods so you had baked maple and richlite added into the confusion.

those are nice, like the GT and Vintage Sunburst with the natural backs. I like the beefier 50's neck profiles myself and the slim taper 60's can be a bit small feeling.

Eh. I understand. I went through this for a while too. HAD to have a Les Paul.

Bought a fantastic Les Paul Custom. Told myself it was great. It did sound great. Tried to gig with it. Played it for a few months. It sat in my closet for a year unplayed.

Sold it, bought two American Stratocasters, retubed my Triple Rec, bought a couple pedals and will never look back.

That's all I'm saying. ;)

I recently did the same thing...HAD to have a Les Paul. Tried a few in guitar center, bought a used Traditional plus and played it a month trying to force myself to love it.
Picked my DGT back up and asked myself why I was playing that ergonomic nightmare? :D

As much as I wanted it to work for me, they just don't.

Yap, I mentioned that. :) What I dig about Sweetwater is they have the inventory pictured so you see what you're getting. Very cool...

Jut sayin', they'll take a LOT of the guess work out of it for ya

Took a look at their site. They'll laugh at my budget and your name will be tarnished. :)

I hear that... it's what I use almost exclusively too unless I think I can snipe it. The only thing I love more than sniping is laughing at people who whine about getting sniped.

I will only likely buy a LP from a solid member on RT/MLP forums, or from a few select stores (wildwood comes to mind) that I know are only choosing the better LPs to sell as well. Usually these guys have already played a bunch and bought the pick of the litter already and hell, they probably know more about picking a good on than me.

Hey Michael,

So what is it about Wildwood that you like? Do they somehow hand select the guitars they sell? Not sure how they could do that, but you mentioned you trust them to buy sight unseen.

This goldtop studio looks nice, and I like the price... although I'd like it even better if it were used.

What other online stores to do trust, and why?

Steve wants that new Les Paul Jr or Special or whatever because he doesn't feel complete unless he has something up for sale in the classifieds. :)

Like a few others in this thread, I have been romanced by the IDEA of being a Les Paul player probably 20 times over the last 30 years. I have owned several bitchin' ones, including a real '68, a '69, a few from the early 70's, mid 70's, late 70's and some newer Reissues and Custom Shop ones. I even owned one of those Max replicas that everyone is crazy about. I also owned John Norum's old Gold Top that John owned when Mark Cameron was his tech. Mark said that Les Paul is the best sounding Les Paul he ever heard and he has always wanted to buy it. Some people on here believe Mark Cameron has a good ear. John couldn't keep it in tune and I could cynically say "that's because it's a Gibson", but I had a new nut installed and new tuners. For a Gibson, it stayed in tune pretty well. I loved looking at it, I just didn't like playing it and shockingly to every one else on the planet, I didn't like recording with it. For the way I play and the style I play, I really don't think LP's even sound that good

I freaking love the way a nice Les Paul looks. I love it. I think in the right sunburst, a LP Standard is the most beautiful guitar ever made. That Bartlett thread Brad posted a couple of years ago was the coolest thread on any guitar forum I have ever seen.

And what's with this desire to be able to be comfortable on a bunch of different guitars other than what you are used to? Are you afraid you are going to be in some important situation where dexterity on a Les Paul or Martin D-28 is going to save the day? Ozzy's going to offer you the gig in person but say, it's yours only if you can be immediately comfortable on this Guild Starfire?

And you talk about selling a Charvel to get a Les Paul. That is like 1980-1985 all over again except in reverse. I have a 1980 Les Paul that I have owned since new. When I played a Kramer in 1983, I realized I didn't like my Les Paul. When I played a Charvel in 1984, I realized I didn't like my Les Paul or that Kramer. ;)

This is why it might be good for me to pickup a used LP Studio that I know plays and sounds well, just to see if I can really get used to it because I've played an LP for a few minutes about every 5 years and always hated them. That said, my fingers are definitely getting stronger from playing the Viper with 10s so maybe it will be easier to adjust. Dunno... but I do know I want to own one to find out but perhaps spending $1500-$2000 is not the way to do it.

And yeah, burst LPs can be amazingly beautiful.

Nah, I decided last week that I'm over trying to be a rock star but it does stink to be so tied to one specific make and model guitar and feel completely goobered up on everything else.

Charvel Schmarvel... those things are for washed up dudes that play You're In Love and Round and Round all the time. I want to learn some Y&T and obviously, can't do that unless I have an LP, now can I??????

Now that I think about it, there's still time for me to make it.
