Steve wants that new Les Paul Jr or Special or whatever because he doesn't feel complete unless he has something up for sale in the classifieds. :)

Charvel Schmarvel... those things are for washed up dudes that play You're In Love and Round and Round all the time.

You rang?

:hys:

I got a Charvel and I confess I don't know how to play either of the songs Bob mentioned... I gotta sell my Charvel?!

Hey Bob if you are still in the OC area and want to check out a LP, I just picked up a newer 2012 Traditional Goldtop. Has a 50's neck. I gave it a Bonamassa makeover (black hardware) and swapped out the pickups for a SD antiquity in the neck and a WCR godwood in the bridge.. Currently in Hawaii for a business trip but I get back on the 5th if you want to swing by after! I may even let you borrow it if your interested :)

Whatever you do, you'd better spend at least $4149 or you'll get a generic piece of mass marketed, mass produced gear meant to please the Guitar Center crowd. ;)

Not at all...you need this:

:rawk: thx rupe!

...I might just get that and record a clip or ten to have the rite of passage done with here on RT...

That instrument must be surrendered to the first dude you see that's sporting a skullet. Sorry, but it's in the rule book.

That's a very cool offer and I appreciate you putting it out there. One thing I did figure out is that at least at this point, I'm pretty sure I like the 60's neck.

Hahaha! Well, it is likely I'm going to buy a generic POS because I think I'm going to go with a Studio to get my feet wet and make sure I can settle into the feel of an LP.

I'll definitely do some clip action just so you guys can see me struggle playing the clangy sounding piece of junk.

If you do this then the instrument doesn't have to be surrendered and we'll all gather in a circle for a shot of geritol and high fives.

I'll hold you to this promise Bob :D !

...now where did I put that walker...it's a long way to walk to the desk where I keep the 4 track...

LOL... I still have my Vestafire 4 track cassette recorder. You know, just in case I ever want to resurrect any of the tunes I did in the 80s.

As for Les Pauls, there's so much misinformation and opinion that it can be next to impossible to reliably educate yourself.
That said, you seem to have figured it out...ignore all the hype about what's supposedly good and bad (weight relief, chambering, pancake bodies, neck profiles, fretboard materials, "good" years, etc) and simply play a bunch of them and see what "speaks" to you.

Some of the biggest myths going are:

1. There is a definitive Les Paul sound
2. Weight relief = bad tone
3. Chambering = bad tone
4. Richlite fretboard = junk
5. Norlin years are all junk (more are than aren't though in my exerience)
6. They can't do good clean tones
7. They are hard to keep in tune (almost always a nut issue...easily fixed)
8. The headstock will break if you look at it wrong (ok, this one is damn near true...don't ever let it fall over, even in it's case)

And I'm sure there are more...

Enjoy your search!

This is probably the thing that has struck me the most. It's astounding the amount of conflicting information that's out there. I also enjoy seeing so many LPs for sale from so many varied years that "aren't weight relieved or chambered like the newer ones." I even saw a 2006 model with that in the ad.

Go big Bob or go home ;) either a Traditional/Standard or Custom. Studios and Jr's are not LP's...really :)

Actually some Studios or the Tribute Studios are pretty nice that have the natural around the maple top which gives it a body binding affect. They come in 50 and 60's necks so you have a choice. For me I like Studios albeit nice visually look like a stripped down Standard w/o binding.

Just remember one that no one rule covers everything. I've seen people bitch ans whine about LP's because one doesn't know how to set it up properly, had a bad cut nut or hate Gibson because they thought a 50 dollar pickup on a 3000 dollar guitar sounded like ass so the whole lot of Gibsons suck or they complaining Gibson QC sucks (it does at times) on a wall of LP's at GC that forget every kid twists on the thumbwheels adjusting the bridge out of whack. The rule is there are dogs in every price range so you could have a $400 studio be a killer guitar or a $4500 Historic be a POS. That us true with most brands around.

Fortunately I've got a secret agent who's played hundreds of LP studios that's going to help ensure I get a "good one" and quite frankly, will almost certainly pick a better one than I could.

I'm thinking of going with one of these models/finishes with the trad burst being first choice:

http://wildwoodguitars.com/products/130 ... ID=345&n=5
http://wildwoodguitars.com/products/128 ... ID=345&n=9
http://wildwoodguitars.com/products/134 ... yID=56&n=1
http://wildwoodguitars.com/products/135 ... yID=56&n=0

Not sure which just yet.

Oh, and if I dig this I might just get an LP Junior too. :D

Those are all sweet if you can get a deal on them. Some of the prices put into a used standard or trad range. I like the natural backs on those ones too.

FUnny about the secret agent. I heard the Sweetwater guys actually go through their inventory first before putting up for sale where GC/MF get em in and put them out there w/o looking and not charge extra for any factory flaws

Hit the Buy it Now on this one ;)

Yeah, I really like that Sweetwater also posts pictures of the ACTUAL guitar on the site so when you buy it, you're getting what you see. It's extra work for them but is a great feature for the buyer.

Not interested in that black beauty. It has a big scratch on it.

No kidding, what a POS

C'mon man, that 57 would prefect to route for 3 full sized humbuckers and a Washburn wonder bar, 4mini toggles, and a Roland guitar synth on board. :)

You do have a point there. It would be great for doing mods to since it's already all scratched up.
