Ideal combo/amp modeler for home use?? last update b4 buying

Line 6 is constantly coming out with updates. I have the HD pod pro rack and it hangs with my Axe II. I preferred it over the 11 rack. The HD500 has all the same features as the HD pro but in a pedal board

As I said above, I have an Axe-FX Standard and still like my HD500. I actually have them all connected together so that the HD500 controls the Axe, but the HD500 goes through the loop of the Axe so I can run its sounds also. I do think the Axe sounds better, but the difference between them is not as great as you would think on some basic tones. I am very much a Tubscreamer->Recto type person and I have spent hours dialing these things in to sound the same, lol. The effects are different as well, but it depends on how picky you are.

The Axe is definitely better all around, but the HD500 is not far behind when you consider what you get for the price. It would be an amazing practice tool, and could be much more. I run it into a SLA-2 and 212 cabs also

I have never played the 11R, but I never had an interest to. It seems to excel at clean and classic rock type gain, which does me no good as I am a metal person.... The metal sounds I have heard out of it are not impressive...

Sounds great.. thanks for the opinions Going the HD500 route I think. Should work perfectly with my ART-SLA2 and 2x12's for what I need. Plus, if I get courageous, I'll maybe run it in the loop of my Killer Kali for effects based stuff live. Cheers and Happy Holidays

i had the pod hd500 for a week, and i compared it to the eleven rack and it wasn't even close. the pod was like fizzy digital crap. i recorded some clips and posted them on soundcloud. having said all that, i hear that the updates made the pod sound better. how much better i don't know, but it would have to be 500% better to hang with the eleven rack. just my opinion.

I do think that the POD HD is more fizzy and ... less defined and clear as compared to the Axe-FX, but there are several ways to deal with this.

Basically, the stock settings are pretty horrible, and there is some really weird crap that goes on inside the POD HD that makes it sound worse. They key to making it sound good is to learn all the oddities and how to work with them. Things like changing the input settings to variax, and lowering the master and bias DEP, and not running effects after the mixer, and centering one side and muting the other side of the mixer.

There are a lot of little tricks that people have figured out to make it sound much clearer and defined and just overall better.

I use my Aldrich loaded Strat into a Wampler Triple Wreck into a DD-5 into a 5 watt Blackheart on the 3 watt setting into a Hermida ported 2x12.
The tone is stunning. Truly killer. Very low volume. Can't praise the Wampler enough.

I just bought a Zoom G3 for $148.00 shipped tonight for home use. They have gotten good reviews and the price is nice.

I highly recommend the Yamaha THR10. Not only is it the best sounding low volume practice amp I've ever heard, the FEEL of it is absolutely amazing. I honestly like it just as much as my big tube rigs - it's one of my favorite amps I've EVER owned.

The fact that it doubles as a recording interface and monitor system is icing on the cake! And the effects are stunning - the stereo reverb is some of the most lush, musical sounding verb I've ever heard.

You can use the USB to jam along with songs on your computer or the aux in for your phone etc. and it actually sounds like you are part of the original mix! Amazing! I honestly can't say enough good things about this little amp.


Here's a metal clip I recorded with it the day I got it with minimal tweaking. Guitar and bass are pure THR recorded direct to me computer using the USB:

Damn that does sound REALLY good... you're not making this easy on me ...lol Great playing as well. Now back to look at the Thr10 a bit more. I was worried about not getting 'modern' enuf with it but you shot that to hell... no post mix fx?? straight amp to computer, direct tone? thanks

Thank you!! Yes, that is pure direct amp tone - zero post processing. Hell, I didn't even use a boost pedal for that and I'm an admitted boost junkie

The #1 tip i can give you is to change the Modern model's cab to the British 4x12 using the editor software - it's like a night and day difference.

So if you test one out in a store and think that the Modern model sounds lacking, that would be why. It uses the American 4x12 model by default, but the British one sounds SO much more natural IMO.


I think that Yamaha hit a home run with their new THR modeling tech. Best modeler I've ever played. It's really the FEEL of it that sets it apart from the crowd IMO. Can't wait to see what future updates bring!

Thank you.. And it's pretty damn cheap to boot. Was about to pull the trigger on the HD500 but now gonna wait a bit and rethink it. Gonna jam me some Petrucci and Andy James then come back to hopefully make a decision.. My old digitech gnx1 is really not inspiring me to practice... Cheers Devin
