if you still gig with a 412 cab, why?

I had two G-Flex cabs but didn't like them. I found them to sound unbalanced and boomy. My Bogner 212 and Stone Age 212 sound plenty loud and big, and I still have to keep the bass dialed back so it doesn't get out of control. Ihave to remind myself when I compared my Bogner to my Marshall 1960b, I could hear little difference in biggness or bass response.

There's nothing quite like the impact of a 4x12, no matter how hard a 2x12 (ported or otherwise) can be run, you can't match the cone movement of four 12" speakers vs two.

Sums it up nicely....and this is why I do.

The OS Port City 2x12 is the closest I've heard to a 4x12 in side by side tests, by the way.

You are correct! I meant the G-Flex, I found boomy. The Port City is balanced and big and punchy enough sounding to prompt one to sell their remaining 412 cabs!

I might go with my be all end all 212 and get another Port City 212 with Celestion Creambacks. :)

Don't get me wrong, my small, portable rig (Splawn Quick Rod, Splawn 2 x 12 w/Small Blocks) sounds massive. However, there's nothing like the feel of playing through a full stack. So, I'll use a full stack wherever I can (Splawn 4 x 12 with Small Blocks, Marshall 1960B with V30's) and use the Splawn 2 x 12 for smaller or pickup gigs. I can even use the Splawn 2 x 12 with one of my "Gig in a box" setups.

First is a BOSS BCB-60:

Digitech Hardwire Tuner
MXR Noise Clamp
BOSS SD-1 Super Overdrive
BOSS ST-2 Power Stack
MXR Carbon Copy
EH 44 Magnum

Second is an Anvil 2-space rack case:

Rocktron VooDu Valve Online
Marshall Valvestate 80/80

Be Prepared!!

I doubt it. Most women say it is too loud and leave.

Unfortunately my 412 (mesa halfback 412 with 2 EVs) has never seen a gig since I have owned it. It is heavy for a 412 and just stays at home. It sounds awesome. If I join another band, it will be the cab I leave at the practice space. I am also considering getting a greenback loaded 412, in 212's I have mainly had to overlook greenbacks due to their low power rating.

One thing to keep in mind when gigging with a 412, is that just cause it doesn't take up much more space than a 212 or have to be louder, there is a certain stigma about using a 412. Some people may give you a hard time when using one, just smile and play. Unfortunately people judge things with their eyes, not their ears. "That rig looks loud"

Im curious... Is the displacement of a 2x12's (front and back) the same as 4x12 (front only)?

For a 212 you can use Splawn Small Blocks or Celestion Creambacks.

I just talked to Scott Splawn and he said he could switch my Splawn 212 order for a 412. However, we live on the third floor of a condo complex and I carry all my gear up and down the steps, I am thinking the Splawn 212 with Small Blocks makes the most sense till we get a house, then I want a 412 with WGS Green Berets. Till then, the Bogner OS212, Stone Age 212C and Splawn 212 will do! :-)

So, who is using one? Do you feel like me, that there is something special about a 412?

Thanks all. :)
Can't beat at minimum 2-4x12 cabs no matter what the venue. You can't come anywhere close to the richer and wide tone spectrum that 2 4x12s put out. 1x12, 2x12 are for your little music room.

You guys are right and right now I have two killer 212 cabs! A Bogner 212 with V30s and a Stone Age 212 with Celestion Lynchbacks which are like V30s mixed with Greenbacks.

I thought it would be cool to have a 212 that is great with my Splawn Street Rod head when I get it, but the Lynchbacks work well with anything.

I am thinking of havin Scott at Splawn build me the 412 and then buying the lightest Greenbacks I can find. Either 25 watt Splawn Small Blocks or 4 WGS Green Berets. There is just something sexy and huge about a 412.

You know, I might swap one of the Lynchbacks in my Stone Age 212 with a Celestion Creamback and that cab can be my do anything with any amp 212!

I know Scott says the deeper 212 kills with his amps but I know my Bogner and Stone Age 212 cabs also kill with amps.
And, I don't need three 212 cabs AND a 412 in my situation.

I wonder why the Splawn 412 cabs have a straight front and not a 1 or 2 inch tilt back baffle like Bogners or Marshalls?
So, if I go Splawn 412, should I go straight or slant?

This will be it:
Bogner 212 with V30s
Stone Age 212C with Creamback/Lynchback
Splawn 412 black with white piping with Splawn Small Blocks or WGS Green Berets

No because the sound coming off the back of a 2x12 is 180* out of phase with the sound coming off the front. This means that if the two were combined they would cancel.

Furthermore, not all 2x12 cabs are open back.
