if you still gig with a 412 cab, why?

Well, I decided my Bogner and Stone Age 212 cabs are enough for now. I ordered a Splawn straight 412 yesterday. Black on black with white piping.

Nothing sounds like a 4 x 12 . Plus if the soundman tries to make your amp sound like a rockman, you can use stage volume. I use at least 1 - 4 x 12 with the band.... Most clubs are so small we can only fit 1- 4 x 12 per guitar player on the stage.

I have to come clean. I settled on a 412 as being my favorite. I prefer my Splawn 412 over my Bogner 212OS, Stone Age 212C and Port City 212.

Yup 4x12 for me too although I just got rid of a few recently. My main gigging and rehearsal 4x12 is one of those DV Mark cabs, I love this thing w/my Bogner (less beamy than my others, great tone IMO- kind of a cross between v30s and 75's) and it weighs like 44 pounds. I can carry it upstairs with one hand.

I use 2 4x12 cabs. Mostly for filling stage volume on my side. Most monitors in places are crappy sounding and inconsistent. I sont have to blast my amp, just to fill stage volume, gives me a better feel as well. I could totally get away with just using one, or maybe a beefy 2x12, but I don't lug my gear or set it up anymore. If I had to, things would probably change

For me it is always easier to carry a 212 because I can grab the 212 with one hand and the head with the other. I am used to dead lifting close to 500 lbs so carrying a 65 lb in one hand is not an issue.

Man, and I was excited that I hit 415 on my dead lifts this week...

I don't have a band or gig anymore, but I have always used a 412. Only recently have I even owned something smaller. As for the weight, commit and start dead lifting. :D

I still use 4x12's because they are the standard. I've never heard of a company claiming their new 4x12 sounds just as full, good, etc...as a good 2x12.

After using 4 4x12's for years, I did try to downsize to 2 2x12's. Nope. 1 4x12 is as downsized as I can go. ymmv

I have been a strong proponent of "4x12's ONLY" for MANY years. In fact, I have only used 4x12's for 24 years of gigging.

However, I recently picked up two horizontal 2x12 cabs from Petersen Custom Cabinets: http://www.petersencustomcabinets.com/2x12_s.php

One of them is a closed back, the other a convertible back. I loaded the closed back cab with two Celestion Creambacks and finally had a chance to take it for a spin this past weekend at a full rehearsal on stage with full P.A. I have to tell you, the 2x12 sounded absolutely phenomenal - warm and HUGE. I was shocked at how much air it moved and how thick it sounded. Plus, it looks cool as hell.

As a result, my days as a 4x12" guy might be numbered at this point. I'm going to be running two of these 2x12's side-by-side with two heads in parallel - the closed back cab with the Creambacks will have a 20th Shiva running into it, and the partially open back cab that I loaded with one English-made G12M-25 and one G12H30 Anniversary will have an Aiken Tomcat running through it, pinned for great power tube grind and the Marshally high-mids I find the 20th Shiva lacks (somewhat).

Don't get me wrong - I still love 4x12's. However, I was so surprised at how much I liked the 2x12 that I am going to switch things up a little. It's time.

For me, it just kinda depends...Just played a show this past saturday, and I took my 5150 212 combo because I had it at home and wouldnt have had to pick up my randall rh200 half stack from my drummer house. Having said that, I think Im just gonna take the randall to shows from now on and keep the 5150 for recording and jamming at home. Im so careful with the 5150, and I love it so much that it makes me paranoid. I DGAF about the rh200...I got the half stack for 140, and its SS, and its lighter than the 5150 and it has casters, so itll probably be easier to move around. Either way, I dont have a preference. I dont think there is anything particularly special about playing a 412 compared to a 212. Ive gigged with an ear candy buzzbomb 212, vader 212, 5150 212 combo, peavey butcher 412, peavey 5150 412, and next up will be the randall 412 (though its not anything special, just your standard 29x29x14 412 cab with shitty celestions, but it works well with the rh200, and the price was seriously unbeatable).

I do because I can..

Yup, this.

The only thing better than 4x12 thump, is a pair of 4x12's

Yup, I carry two, if there is room. Sounds better and wets more vaginas.....

I thought you didn't use cabs at all anymore?

I haven't used cabs in years, and when I did the last few it was 1x2 thieles. That said, if for any reason I decide to use cabs again I'd really like a Kerry Wright stack with old GBs...

Yes, I still gig with 412s. Why? Because I like the way they punch me in the gut when I play.

2x12s are way bright. 4x12s have the beef that can't be beat.

I can appreciate a light rig tho. I wanna pickup a cool combo to drag around for practice, and then use the rockstar setup for the unlikely gig lol.

Nah not true. I have had many 212 cabs that were dark.

I am running one Splawn 412 as a ported 212, just two speakers.
Amazing.

I use In-Ear Monitors, so cab size is irrelevant for me. I prefer 2x12's. Im not trying to compete with the bass player for lowend frequencies. I like to sit squarely in my designated middle range. The FOH guy likes it too.

I am rocking Dual 2x12's for both metal and pop punk. Sounds great and plenty ful.

I can't get enough of Splan 412 cabs. Ordering another.

One of the best ways to run a 412 is with two speakers missing.

No way - well, maybe some are

As mentioned, my Petersen 2x12" cab loaded with Creambacks sounds as thick as molasses with plenty of beef to the tone. I wouldn't have believed it could be possible a few months ago. I am pleasantly surprised.

I let the whiskey take care of that......

I should clarify; 2x12 vertical slants are bright because there's no cancellation. Otherwise, and horizontal straight 2x12 is laughable, and would be better served in the trunk of my car boomin' rap music.
