Ahh man what a train wreck that video was........Anyway lets try and not get off topic here

Owned mine for 18 months, great amp for the price. Ch 3 was way too think (too many pre tubes). I would have liked another ch 2 instead. Sold it and bought a Marsha, something about the sig tone of the 5153 sounded cheap and nasty?

If anyone feels Channel 3 too compressed, should try 1 or 2 12DW7 in one of the last 3 preamp positions. It's half 12AX7 half 12AU7. Gain knob gets usable past noon, the channel gets more open and dynamic, now you can effectively use pedals, cuts back the compression and gain. A standard 12AU7 or AT7 just takes too much away. If you are into metal, you still have more than enough gain.

Dare I say had a talk with Fortin and we might do something to it on the red channel! But man this thing is a monster. You bet cha gotta move some air and not earth shaking air. That is when it wakes up big time!
Ok, now you have my attention. Tell me more! :checkthisout:

Not until after the first of the year and then the fun begins!
Oh man, your killing me with that.

Not trying to kill ya! Mike and I are gonna wait till after the first of the year. So both of us can enjoy the holidays!

what are you wanting done? the 5150 III does not need anymore than what it already has - its quite balanced in channel 3 and ive you have had any time on the other 5150's and know how to use your volume knob you would know it.

just curious as to what you are looking for out of one that you dont already see on the third channel.

Cool thanks for that tip ! It would be nice if channel was a little more open

Im also a little curious about running Kt66's in the power section, could be a nice match.

I thought it odd/interesting that EVH was staying on one channel and just using his volume control

plus I've listened to lots of 5153 clips and they never really did anything for me

but the tone EVH was getting out of it was pretty much W&C_1st
IMO

So I was trying out a few different boost pedals with my 5153 last night...... I like the maxon 808 with most amps but the 5153 does not.. Too much of a mid boost for an amp that already has tons of mids. I have an od9 pro+ that sounds much better with it...So I would say boosts that are more like a Ts9 or od9 seem work better.... I like to put a boost in front of most amps but I think the 5153 on channel 3 is good without one also. The od9 does add a little magic though, it seems to clear things up a little and retain the bass. I can set the gain very low on the amp, the 5153 can get a bit messy with the gain even as low as noon on channel 3.

Sounded great to me!
He was pretty trashed though.....

He seems to be switching channels all over the place and doesn't keep it on just one. At the beginning of the vid, when he goes over to tweak the amp and tells the crowd with his hand to "wait a second", you can see it's on channel 3 (red).

+1

I have a Maxon OD9 and the OD9 pro+. I extensively A/B'd them and decided I liked the standard OD9 better, though they were both very close and both sounded great with the EVH. The Pro+ seems to be slighlty more compressed and it has more gain (two things I didn't want in a OD pedal since the 5150III already has a lot of both).

I love how the OD9 increases sustain of Channel 2 while making it more focused and punchy. Other OD's changed the sound too much or not enough, this pedal does it just right in the III.

Pulled the trigger on the matching cab. The amp sounds great through any of my cabs but I have to say, this cab and this amp together are  :inlove:  :inlove:

Jeff,

This is one of my all time favorite amps.... Glad to see it get the full respect it deserves. The engineering in there is tits too!!!

Sweet! I have the white and the black one. Just something about the head with the matching cab. It definitely has some mojo.
