Is it possible for a song to have too many solos?

Yes. I absolutely hate solos that are wanking just for the sake of wanking. If it fits the vibe of the song, I’m all for it, but a lot that I’ve heard over the years do nothing for me. I’m not going to be impressed by how many notes you can burn through on the fretboard.

I also know that my thoughts on the matter may not be particularly popular on a guitar board.

With that said, give me something like the leads in Floods and I'm all in

depends on the band, the song, the genre...for me.

Deep Purple, Led Zep, Yes, Kiss, etc., have a good ration of solos per song IMO. So do most of the metal bands I like. Dream Theater, Holdsworth, can always do more.

Im sure captain beefheart isnt the worst offender of "too much" but I tried to give a listen and its just... too much. Not even just solos. Thats my one example. But I can dig like Alexander the great or dantes inferno by iced earth.

Megadeth is a great example of tons of solos and never too many in my experience. They just fit their songs so well.

Some songs don't need solos, others are a series of connected solos. Depends on the quality of writing, really.

More bands need dueling solos Cacophony style, like when Eternity's End had Phil Togus and Muenzner shredding simultaneously.

Even bad solos are better than no solos. Give me all the notes.

It's also possible to have a song that one solo is too many. It all just depends on the context.

St. Anger often gets criticized for not having any solos, but I don't think solos would have made that thing sound any better.
