Is the slo all it’s cracked up to be ?

Do you think the SLO 30 is a good bedroom amp? Good crunch at reasonable levels?
I can only speak for the HR25, but mine works great at low volumes. Easy to control and sounds great. Yes you are not getting that power tube breakup, but it still sounds good. I need to try mine through a power station to see how much really cranking the power section adds.

When people say an amp doesn't work well at low volumes that can mean more than one thing. Is it hard to control? Can I get the tones at the volume I want? How much of a change is there with move volume? etc.

I think we often overlook that some amps change pretty drastically with more volume and others change less. Same with speakers. While more volume to a point is generally better, its how much better is it?

I love mine. It’s not a thrash metal amp. It’s for guys who like dynamics, actually use the knobs on the guitar, and play chords other than 5 chords the whole song.

Simple answer. Yes, no, maybe.

It depends really. And that is based on what you want to hear, how the amps feels and reacts to your playing. In that regard it's no different than any other amp. Some love it, some don't and some are just ok with it. In the end, the user has to decide. Nobody will ever debate it's build quality but in the end, it's all about the tone to the user.

It's not for everybody but I love mine. I do agree that it has a slightly lazy attack. If I want something tighter I'll use something else. The SLO arrived in '87 and has remained the same, these modern types of tones weren't on the radar at that point.

I've never been fortunate to play thru a SLO . I did have a HR25 briefly (different amp I know) and didn't care for it at all , I couldn't get my Splawn SS plugged back in soon enough . I had such high hopes for the HR25 but it just sounded fizzy with a really loose low end. FWIW a few months ago I bought one those AMT S1 preamp pedal and a Seymour Duncan Powerstage 200 . Thru two 1x12s loaded with Celestion EVHs it's a killer sounding little rig

I'm a big fan of the AMT stuff....had an R1 years ago that was awesome, and now I have their R/S Lead pedal (recto/soldano)

Recorded this lil demo clip with it straight in to my interface

Not sure if this has been posted in here yet or not (I’m too lazy to read through all
The posts) but allegedly Killswitch engage used a boosted SLO for My curse. (I’m sure the peavey 5150 was used too but the tone on that song is immense).

I’ve played through a few SLO’s over the years and have heard mostly amazing tones and maybe one or two that were not so inspiring.

Either way, the amp can hang, find the right boost and it’ll make you it’s bitch

That is a killer song off a killer album and has killer tone but I don't remember ever reading that a SLO was used. They do mix in a lot of amps though on their recordings so it wouldn't surprise me, I just have not read that and can't find a reference. Can you?

TS - also check out Splawns if you have not already. They may give you a bit more of what you were missing with the an SLO and they def have balls.

i took this pic on my old flip phone at ozzfest 05 of one of the killswitch dudes rig and theres a SLO on the bottom and a H&K on top so they had an SLO for at least a tour

My Slo is in my top 4 favorite amps of all time. Such a great amp for high gain articulate singing leads as well as thick and articulate crunch. As others have stated it's not a modern metal amp and I don't care as it's perfect for what it does.

A good example

I am using WGS ET65s with my HR25 and love it. I can totally see what you mean about a loose low end, but I only play hard rock and classic metal so for me it works like a charm. I love the normal channel. In fact if there was a soldano with like 2 or 3 normal channels, I would be all over that. Could set up one edge of breakup, one for some good crunch, and one all out.

The Soldano HR25 also really made me work on my playing and technique, can't be sloppy with a Soldano. Never played an SLO or Splawn, but they are on my long to try list.

Sounds Choice, good job!
