Is there anything wrong with running a lay down transformer in the upright position without the cover plate?

Saw an amp with a laydown transformer, that was standing upright with no cover on the exposed side. Any negative effects to this? Usually, this exposed side would be below the deck of the chassis and hidden/protected. Would it cause any kind of extra noise, etc.?

Moisture can get into places it shouldn’t. Hands can touch something they shouldn’t. Damage could occur accidentally with no protection from end bells. Functionality wise it won’t hurt anything though.

I just ordered a Mercury Magnetics PT that’s normally lay down, but they will make it stand up style with normal end bells.

Yeah, the amp I was looking at had MM iron in it. I imagine that if you contacted MM with the model number of the tranny, they could probably hook a person up with the right end bell?

I just ordered a set of end bells and cut the O of the bells into U and then bolted them on. I did that to my MM OT on my 5150 II decades ago. Easier and much more simple than completely uninstalling the transformer to then re-install again.

Ok, so I guess a person would need to know the spacing of the bolts, etc and just order the end bell that fits? I would imagine that not all end bells are the same size right? I would only really need one, because the other side already is covered.

Yeah you’d need the model number from the sticker if it has one still.
