I've heard one blues song: I get it

Real blues players are self taught and don't know about this secret note.

Occasionally there's a guy in the audience that wants to hear blues and my band doesn't know any. So we'll do some made up 12 bar blues songs and I'll solo all through it using the pent mode but also go for all the major modes depending on the root the bass player is playing, basically it starts sounding like jazz...and the dude will sit down confused and quit asking for blues.

That's based on the premise that if you've heard one blues song, you've heard them all.

And it's pretty much true. I'll give you that SRV was tremendous and took the genre about as far as it could go, but beyond that, it's pretty much jamming and noodling.

Let's face it. You can pretty much play any blues song on your stereo (that's like an ipod for you younger shredders) and jam along with it immediately. If that's a feature of the music, then the music isn't very advanced, ergo, it's no good.

It's flat ridiculous to dismiss an entire genre of music as "no good" because you can jam to it immediately. Why does music have to be "advanced" to be good? Also, just because anyone can mindlessly meander over a blues progression in the pentatonic box, doesn't mean that the artists that have mastered blues playing aren't every bit as great as Holdsworth just because of his different technical ability. It's music, not some ridiculous competition to see who can make the most complex, dissonant, technique heavy composition. Also, I could easily jam to a Holdsworth backing track. Hell... put anything up there and I can jam to it. Doesn't prove anything...

You're applying your subjective opinion of the music to dismiss it and to a great blues player that might be pretty offensive...

No, I'll take my Allan Holdsworth, thank you very much.

You can have him. I'd rather have a root canal with no anesthesia than sit through an entire Holdsworth gig... While I recognize the amazing dedication it took to put together his incredible technique, the music does nothing for me after one song.

Of course, that is my subjective opinion of his music and is not a dismissal of his music, or the entire genre of music he is part of. See how that works?

Glad you liked it. A few of the individual notes in the scales may overlap with a few notes of the blues scale so it's all good.

No, it's not Michael Sweet singing. But the singer did actually have Allan Holdsworth record a solo on his latest release. I find that fact to be incredible.

Yep playing was nice but just because you can play more notes faster outside the blues scale doesn't mean other forms of music that are more basic suck. It's a very very immature attitude or at worst a dickish elitist attitude.

It's not that he doesn't like it. It's that he made a completely ignorant statement about it. Funny thing is I like a lot of prog music which he claims to like as well. Actually I listen to way more prog music than I do any blues but I wouldn't have the balls to make such asinine statements like "if you've heard one blues song you've heard them all".

I grew up listening to AC/DC, Maiden, Scorps, UFO, Priest, Ratt, Dokken, etc. I get there's all sorts of blues influence in that stuff....believe me...I get it ......but.....straight blues is definitely NOT my thing.

Not liking something and not respecting something for the influence it's had on what you do like are two different things and I think that's the point people are trying to get across here. Nobody cares about the OP's likes and dislikes, they care that he is stating that the blues is basically one dimensional and of no worth.
